The Chief Economic Adviser will report directly to the Chief Executive with responsibility for leading the CMA's economists, market researchers, statisticians and econometricians, with accountability for the quality of economic work carried out by the CMA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the economic work carried out by the CMA is of consistently high quality and reflects the CMA's broader strategic approach to deliver maximum impact.
  • Provide strong, inspirational leadership for the talents of 150+ economists, ensuring we continue to attract and retain high quality economists and foster an inclusive environment where teams are empowered, and the team capability is improved.
  • Lead the economics profession at the CMA, ensuring the development of a strong, intellectually rigorous and responsive culture in which economists share information on cases, provide analytical support to each other, cascade development ideas and feel part of a professional grouping.
  • Ensure the optimal allocation of economic resources across the CMA's projects and the effective and robust delivery of the CMA's caseload, providing guidance on individual cases from their early stages, particularly with reference to those cases raising complex economic issues.
  • Be an advisor to the CMA Board, contributing to the development and implementation of organisational strategy, providing expert advice and guidance to ensure the CMA's approach to analytics and economics is robust and best in class across all its tools and functions.
  • Be a collaborative and engaged member of the CMA's Senior Executive team and Executive Committee providing joint executive leadership of the CMA ensuring the work of the organisation aligns with the strategic priorities and ambition set by the Board.
  • Ensure that risks are appropriately identified, managed and reported, and that organisational development continues to deliver a positive, respectful and inclusive culture in line with the CMA's values.
  • Take an active part in other senior decision-making fora, including the Case and Policy Committee and the Resource, Pipeline and Prioritisation Committee.
  • Be a strong external advocate for the CMA in the UK, Europe and internationally and build strong relationships with counterparts, including competition and regulatory authorities, Government Departments, economic academics and consultants; represent the CMA externally through public speaking engagements, communicating effectively to both technical and wider audiences, and potentially act as an expert witness in litigation.
  • As a key member of the CMA's Senior Leadership Team, play an active role in the ongoing corporate management and development of the organisation.

Person Specification

It is important through your CV and Statement of Suitability that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following essential criteria.

  • Excellent competition economist with exceptional academic and professional qualifications and experience, holding at least a Masters degree in a branch of economics relevant to competition policy.
  • Exceptional experience of working on the economics of competition law cases with a proven strong track record of taking strategic decisions and providing high quality and impactful economic advice and the ability to debate economic analysis at the most senior level.
  • A track record of strong inclusive leadership skills at a senior decision making/executive level within an organisation of similar size and complexity, with demonstrable experience of developing a clear vision and promoting a strong culture of openness to challenge, collaboration and delivery to achieve robust and impactful outcomes.
  • Substantial experience of leading, planning and directing cases that involve applying cutting edge technical and theoretical concepts, and working to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with proven ability to communicate, influence and explain complex issues with clarity, simplicity and precision to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
