This role profile is a guide to the work you will be required to undertake. It may be changed from time to time to incorporate changing circumstances, and you may be required to be flexible and perform other duties as required by your manager. The overriding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

1. Job Purpose

To assist the Security Manager, and lead a team, to deliver an appropriate level of security and car parking with a view to protecting people and property and the prevention and detection of crime, in line with company and client procedures, through the leadership and motivation of a team of Security Officers, Team leaders and Supervisors. To develop the service by carrying out a variety of tasks associated with the delivery of a high quality and efficient Service, ensuring best practice is maintained at all times.

2. Role of the Department

To provide a Security service at the Trust 365 days per year, as set out in site specific Security and Car Parking Service Level Agreements, Assignment Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and Risk Assessments.

3. Key Result Areas

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service to all.
  • In support, and in the absence of, the Security Manager, plan and deliver a Security Service that operates and complements the overall efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of Medirest Services.
  • Promote Security awareness throughout the Trust.
  • Assist departments with identifying risk and advise on security matters.
  • Ensure that Security Services are delivered in line with the Security Service Level Specifications.
  • Engage and develop a positive working relationship with client stakeholders to ensure service delivery to the Project Agreement.
  • Embrace the ethos of continuous improvement and business excellence to support future changes and needs of the Client and Trust.
  • Effective management and leadership of the Security team.
  • Responsible for the Security elements of the project plan in liaison with the Security Manager.
  • Lead projects in the absence of the Security Manager.
  • Maintain high visibility internal and external patrols across the site.
  • Activate or de-activate alarm systems.
  • Ensure schedules of checks are followed in accordance with Procedures.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to all security, fire, and emergency incident requests, including when Trust staff are faced with violent or abusive patients, visitors, or members of the public.
  • Undertake verbal de-escalation and, as necessary, trained restrictive practices in a professional and legal manner, and in accordance with policy, risk assessments and SOPs.
  • Complete daily reports of accidents and incidents following the agreed procedure, ensuring all necessary action is taken.
  • Aid and support all patients, visitors and staff when faced with difficult and distressing situations.
  • As part of the Fire Team, ensure fire safety checks are maintained in accordance with the Fire Safety Policy.
  • In the absence of the Security Manager, the management of ID and Access Control systems and processes.
  • Use of IT software in relation to security and car parking operations.
  • Operation of closed-circuit television systems in accordance with Trust policy, SOPs, GDPR and ICO Code of Practice (SIA CCTV licence holders only).
  • Support Police with investigation of criminal acts.
  • Provide management of crowd or traffic control duties as required.
  • Management of key control process.
  • Management of Lost Property process.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and risk assessments.
  • To work co-operatively with colleagues as part of the team and perform additional duties of a routine or non-routine nature as and when directed by the supervisors or management team.

4. Skillset

  • Valid frontline SIA licence.
  • Valid first aid qualification.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Good knowledge of SIA licensing requirements.
  • Confident working in a hospital environment and aware that at times you will come in contact with patients that are particularly unwell or showing signs of distress.
  • Able to communicate appropriately and effectively with a range of people including those with mental health conditions.
  • Able to communicate at all levels up to and including Trust Executives.
  • Able to verbally de-escalate in highly charged and emotional situations.
  • Knowledgeable about public safety and security procedures/protocols, including counter terrorism/Martyn's Law.
  • Knowledgeable, or willing to learn, about The Mental Health Act, CQC guidelines and NHS England Security guidelines.
  • Able to work under pressure, individually and as part of a team with a flexible approach to meet the needs of the business.
  • The ability to communicate and work with patients, other members of staff and visitors to the hospital.
  • Ensure that information regarding patients, staff and visitors is secure and not to divulge personal details at any time or under any circumstances.
  • Understanding of a range of routine work procedures and protocols.
  • Understanding of relevant Manual Handling procedures and protocols.
  • Understanding of basic Infection Control.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety issues.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise work.
  • Ability to organise own and other's day-to-day work.
  • Lead or participate in projects and assignments as may be required.

5. Responsibilities of the Post Holder

  • Deputise for the Security Manager during times of absence, working to the Security Manager job description for limited periods.
  • Provide a support service throughout the organisation and in patient care in a polite, friendly, and helpful manner.
  • Effective people planning, staff mapping and successful integration of Security teams.
  • To develop our people plan to support current and future business priorities.
  • Ensure that Security team members are continually trained and developed via progressive utilisation of personal development plans and training including external, Medirest, mandatory, refresher, NVQ and modern apprenticeship frameworks, and annual appraisals.
  • Adhere to the management of staff within statutory, contractual, Compass, and local HR policies and procedures including absence management, disciplinary and grievance procedures in conjunction with the embedded HR Manager.
  • Development of an integrated, well trained, and flexible workforce matched to the needs of the service.
  • Facilitate activities to support identified talent.
  • Assist the Security Manager in building a culture of open and honest communication and positive staff engagement.
  • To maintain records and staff correspondence accurately and efficiently.
  • Accountability for reconciliation of days cash receipts and responsibility to ensure the handling and transportation cash is carried out in accordance with Trust and Medirest procedures.
  • To complete tasks to the required standards as set out in the Security and Car Parking Service Level Agreements, policies, AIs, SOPs, and risk assessments.
  • As part of a team, to provide a comprehensive security and car parking service to patients, staff, and visitors at the hospital.
  • To follow departmental/Trust policies and procedures and attend all relevant training.
  • To train, demonstrate and explain duties and working practices to new starters.
  • To complete work records in the required format to ensure adherence to standards.
  • To use equipment following operational guidelines, reporting defects to your line manager.
  • To ensure that confidentiality is observed at all times and that matters relating to duties undertaken or information received during the course of duties remains confidential.
  • To make sure you and your team meet the legal, company and client regulations for fire, health, safety, the environment, and the SIA.
  • Conduct accident and incident investigations, providing the relevant reporting and follow-up actions.
  • Assist with the management of the Security budget to contract baseline.
  • Maintenance of labour and pay control systems including weekly labour reporting.
  • Strategic management of Security Services so as to best minimise the risk of service failure and penalties under the PMS.
  • Delivery of monthly performance management data and reports.
  • To deliver PBIT responsibilities whilst ensuring core contract quality standards are maintained.
  • Represent Medirest at relevant meetings and working groups.
  • Maintain statistical information around performance management of services.

6. Data protection and Information Governance

Ensure you and all staff having access to computer information are subject to General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), and Information Governance policies and procedures. All staff, whether permanent, temporary, or contracted, including students, contractors and volunteers are responsible for ensuring they do not divulge personal details and are aware of the Information Governance requirements in the NHS and for ensuring they comply with these on a day-to-day basis.

7. Infection control

Infection Control is everybody's responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trust's Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA. All staff employed by Medirest have the following key responsibilities:

  • Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and/or between each patient contact.
  • Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
  • Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty inform their manager.

8. Freedom to Act

The role has set policies and procedures to work to, with guidance from standard operating procedures. The jobholder will be aware of standards to be achieved, but a supervisor or manager will be available for reference.

9. Physical, Mental and Emotional Effort Required

Duties require a combination of walking, standing, and an element of restraint. Duties will involve coming into contact with mental health and distressed patients and visitors. Duties will involve being subject to violence and aggression. Duties will occasionally involve being in contact with bodily fluids. Duties will require concentration required when completing reports and using IT systems. Duties will include interruptions for emergency incidents. Duties will require remaining calm and professional in volatile situations and under pressure. Duties will include managing and leading people.

10. Outline of Working Conditions

The role will involve dealing with distressing and emotional situations involving patients and service users. The role is influenced by the demands of the service users, which may lead to increases in pressure and workload. Duties involve coming into contact with some hazards and inclement weather conditions.
