The verger at HMS Collingwood is part of a team consisting of 6. The chaplaincy consists of 2 buildings – the chapel and coffee bar, offices, heads, and classroom. Additionally, there is an Islamic prayer room. The verger’s main areas of responsibility are building custodian and CAF chaplaincy sub‑fund management. The verger has no line management of any other staff. Training can be provided for any of the liturgical tasks within this job.

Role

  • To verge and set up for weekday services and chaplaincy events as required.
  • Responsible for day‑to‑day access, security, and health and safety for all visitors to the church/chaplaincy.
  • Answer routine correspondence and telephone enquiries in relation to church and chaplaincy business.
  • Manage the chaplaincy funds and act as the treasurer liaising with the CWD CAF.
  • Responsible for the stock and supply of material to the church and chaplaincy.
  • To assist and support the chaplaincy administrator as required.

Main tasks

  • Administrative and liturgical support to the chaplaincy.
  • Treasurer to the chaplaincy fund.
  • Full member of the chaplaincy team participating in team meetings (monthly).
  • Responsible for the health and safety of the chaplaincy premises.
  • Building Manager and Health and Safety Representative for the chapel and chaplaincy.
  • Attend Building Managers Meetings.
  • Defect reporting for buildings 160 and 163.
  • Liaise with cleaners, grounds staff, and contractors as required to ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of buildings 160 and 163 and their close environs.
  • Conduct regular fire safety checks for buildings 160 and 163 in accordance with statutory requirements.
  • Oversight of the Islamic Prayer Room (located in building 642).
  • Liaise with the building manager as required.
  • Maintain stationery store for chaplaincy, order stock new as required.
  • Maintain and order stock of church supplies (candles, wafers, wine and oil, etc.).
  • Assist with preparing and printing orders of service – liaise with reprographics for main events (Remembrance, Trafalgar Day, Carol Service).
