A Newly Available Part Time Role working alongside experienced team members to provide support and care to a 56‑year‑old man who lives in his own home. He has mild learning difficulties, Cerebral Palsy (from birth) and Multiple Sclerosis since 2012. MS has accelerated the deterioration of the symptoms he had with the CP, so from being quite active he is now predominantly chair and bed bound, has had hoists fitted for transferring him to and from bed, chairs, shower and wheelchairs, and his life has undergone a significant change. He is still social, has a great sense of humour and can be a lot of fun, but is inevitably frustrated by his condition; keeping him cheerful is an extremely important part of the job.
Responsibilities
- All personal care tasks, such as showering, catheter care, and, following an operation in early February 2026, also stoma care.
- Household chores and duties.
- Preparing healthy, predominantly liquidised Level 4 meals and drinks.
- Administering medication.
- Supporting him with daily exercises.
- Supporting him at medical appointments.
- Managing his moods, especially when his current condition gets him down.
- Supporting him in a range of activities including art and crafts, photography, iPad games, trips out and possibly introducing him to other activities.
- Taking him out in his wheelchair around the town and driving his wheelchair; accessing an accessible vehicle to activities, appointments and visits to friends and family.
- Creating a strong relationship with him and other team members – it is vital for his mental health that you make friends with him and his team.
- Respectful of confidentiality and privacy.
- Responsible, reliable, and trustworthy – punctual, and flexible.
- Respectful of dignity and independence.
- Being an attentive listener – with the patience to learn his indistinct speech.
- Good communication and social skills and staying calm under pressure.
- An outward sense of fun.
- Work ethic of cleanliness and hygiene.
- Driving licence for an automatic car preferred.
Schedule
The newly available shifts are four mornings a week, each of five and a half hours, on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. There will be opportunities for other hours covering holidays and absences of other team members and there are also some afternoon shifts available as a second role or as possible extension for this one.
