Come and be part of our team in our new school, Compass Community School Redwood Park in Milton Keynes. Be part of the development and opening of a new independent day school. A brand new 90 place school for pupils aged 7-19. Our children come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH). Many will also have other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) such as Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties. The work we do is both varied and challenging and, as a trauma and attachment-informed organisation, all staff are provided with extensive therapeutic training and support. Our closely triangulated approach places the child at the centre of decision-making, ensuring that education and therapy professionals, parents/carers, local authority teams and, most importantly, our students can work together to secure outstanding outcomes for all.

Role

We are all principally teachers of children before teachers of subjects. Central to this role is knowing the child, building professional, nurturing and positive relationships and motivating students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging and differentiated music lessons tailored to students with SEMH needs.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment that supports emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
  • Use music as a therapeutic tool to enhance students’ self-expression, confidence, and social skills.
  • Develop individualised learning plans and provide targeted support to meet diverse needs.
  • Collaborate with pastoral staff, SENCOs, and other professionals to ensure holistic support for students.
  • Organize and facilitate music-based extracurricular activities, workshops, and performances.
  • Assess and monitor students’ progress, providing feedback to students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Promote positive relationships with parents, carers, and the wider school community.
  • Uphold safeguarding and child protection responsibilities in line with school policies.

Essential Person Specification

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or relevant teaching qualification.
  • Experience working with children and young people with SEMH needs.
  • Strong musical skills with the ability to teach a range of instruments and musical styles.
  • Knowledge of strategies to support students with SEMH in an educational setting.
  • Excellent classroom management and behaviour support skills.
  • Ability to build positive, trusting relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable

  • Experience delivering music therapy or creative arts interventions.
  • Additional training in SEN, trauma-informed practice, or mental health support.
  • Ability to lead school music events, choirs, or bands.
