£95,000–£110,000 (flexible for an exceptional candidate) + NHS Pension
Remote-first with weekly travel to sites in the East of England and South West
Compass Associates is working exclusively by a respected not-for-profit provider of NHS care to appoint a Development Director. The organisation has an ambitious growth plan for the next two to three years, built on winning new NHS contracts. This role will lead that work: finding, shaping and winning new business, hands‑on and from the front.
The role
- Lead a team of around 14 across business development and bids, commercial modelling, and market development and communications, through three heads of function. You'll report to the Chief Commercial Officer.
- Own the growth plan: spot and qualify opportunities, engage commissioners and partners, and build compelling business cases.
- Lead multi‑million‑pound NHS tenders from start to finish, writing and shaping bids yourself and delivering to fixed deadlines.
- Bring commercial rigour to every decision, testing viability, pricing, risk and appetite.
- Unite a geographically dispersed team. Facilitate, present and lead in person, not only over Teams.
About you
- A proven record of winning NHS contracts as tender lead, ideally for integrated or multidisciplinary services.
- Experience of delivering NHS services within a private business
- Provider-side experience. Commissioning (CCG/ICB) experience is highly valued, and a mix of NHS and independent-sector experience would be ideal.
- A strong bid writer with sharp numerical and commercial skills. M&A or partnership experience is a bonus.
- Hands‑on, results‑driven and comfortable working in the detail.
- A low-ego, honest leader who challenges respectfully and builds on existing work rather than dismissing it.
- We'll consider established directors and senior bid or BD leaders who are ready to step up.
What's on offer
- £95,000–£110,000, with flexibility for an exceptional candidate.
- NHS Pension, 30 days' holiday plus bank holidays, and a strong benefits package.
- Remote‑first working with regular in‑person time across sites.
- A senior role in a non‑hierarchical, mission‑led organisation with no shareholders.
All applications and conversations will be handled in strict confidence. The client's name will be shared at the appropriate stage.
