Community Volunteer - Northern Ireland

Volunteering is a great way to make a valuable difference, no matter how big or how small the contribution may be. So why not start today and make a positive impact to the lives of deaf people and those with hearing loss or tinnitus.

We are RNID. Together we’ll make life more inclusive for deaf people and those with hearing loss or tinnitus.

What you’ll be doing

As a Community Volunteer, you will:

reach out to community groups, other charities, etc. to offer informative presentations or attend meetings to share insight into deafness, hearing loss and tinnitus

deliver talks, presentations online and face-to-face (depending on practicality)

set up RNID Information stands at various locations, including libraries, community centres and hospitals within your local area

ensure leaflets and equipment arrive at the venue in time, and pack up at the end of the event

promote the work of RNID and associated local services

respond to questions and enquiries from visitors and assist as appropriate

record any enquires that are out of your knowledge base and follow up accordingly

monitor the number of enquiries at each event and feedback in a timely manner

be proactive in sourcing venues for information stands

What you need

You will need to provide the names of two referees who have known you for at least two years, preferably in a professional context. This can include employers, colleagues, teachers, tutors, support workers, community leaders, child’s teacher or a member of a hobby or exercise group you belong to.

Here’s what we think could be beneficial:

confident in delivering online presentations on MS teams/ Zoom

confident in speaking to groups and individuals in the community

willingness to learn about, or expand knowledge of, issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing people

friendly, reliable, and approachable manner

ability to listen to questions and to answer appropriately

willing to work with a wide range of people

Where

We are looking for volunteers in all areas of Northern Ireland.

At RNID, we take very seriously our responsibilities for the safety and welfare of the people who use our services, our volunteers, staff and the organisation as a whole.

All applicants successful at interview will be asked to disclose unspent convictions under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (as amended in 2013).

Criminal records will be taken into account only when the conviction is relevant and declaring a conviction will not necessarily prevent you from being considered for a role. Any decisions will depend on the type of offence and its relevance to the volunteering role that you are applying for at RNID.
