Leeds Gypsy & Traveller Exchange, known more commonly as Leeds GATE, is a vibrant and brave grassroots organisation led by Gypsy and Traveller people in partnership with others in and across West Yorkshire. Being an Executive Board Member of Leeds GATE offers a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth within a dynamic and innovative organisation, at the heart of the community and Gypsy and Traveller charity sector.

Do you have a good understanding of financial management, are you familiar with annual budgets and good accounting practices? Do you have knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities? Do you have the skills to review financial data and contribute to an annual audit process? Do you have good IT skills (particularly Excel)? Do you have good communication and interpersonal skills? Do you feel comfortable to speak out and use independent judgement?

The Executive Board is responsible for excellent governance and we value lived experience and community representation as a key part of that. The board is not exclusively made up of Gypsy and Traveller people; however, applications from Gypsy or Traveller people are particularly welcomed. We are looking for a broad range of skills to enhance the Board. Most importantly, you will align with and believe in our values. These include expert knowledge in these areas:

  • Treasurer – Financial background, particularly in relation to budget management and annual accounts
  • Lived experience as a Gypsy or Traveller from West Yorkshire

As a Trustee, you will be expected to regularly attend board meetings which take place every 6 weeks for 2 hours maximum. You will also be expected to attend an annual staff away day and/or training event. You will also be required to commit some independent time for meeting preparation and will have an ongoing responsibility to keep yourself up to date with Leeds GATE business and operating environment.

At Leeds GATE, we care about participation and inclusion. Meetings are normally face-to-face, but it is possible to join via Teams or Zoom if you can’t attend in person. The timing/dates of the board meetings happen at a mutually convenient time for all members and we are flexible to different needs.

What do you get out of it? You will be a part of an exciting, fast-paced charity which works with one of the most marginalised groups in the UK. You will become a key part of our organisation, learning and growing with us. You will have an opportunity to do something that is meaningful and impactful. You will gain valuable experience of how a charity operates. Our current board members describe the following:

  • It gives you a voice
  • It keeps your brain active
  • You are contributing to positive change
  • It is your time, for you to use your brain, it’s not about the kids or grandkids
  • I see this as my contribution to making a change for my kids and grandkids

If you would like some more information, or want to get more of a sense of what we are about, please do email our Director of People and Operations, Nicki Turner – nicki@leedsgate.co.uk.
