In this role, no two days are the same. You might be supporting a young person to attend college, learn to cook, manage a budget, attend appointments, or build the confidence to try something new. You will encourage independence, celebrate achievements, and help young people recognise their own strengths. A key part of the role is motivating young people when they may not feel motivated themselves. Progress can be slow, and some of the biggest successes come from the small steps taken every day.
The Challenges
Working in residential childcare is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. Our young people may struggle with anxiety, low mood, self-harm, emotional dysregulation, trauma responses, or a reluctance to engage with education, activities, or support. At times, you may experience verbal aggression, challenging behaviour, missing-from-home incidents, safeguarding concerns, or situations that require a calm and measured response. Because of the experiences our young people have lived through, conversations and situations within the role can occasionally be triggering. We encourage applicants to consider their own experiences, emotional wellbeing, and ability to hear difficult life stories while continuing to provide safe, consistent support.
What We're Looking For
- Can build positive relationships based on trust, respect, and consistency.
- Remain calm and professional during challenging situations.
- Are patient, encouraging, and committed to helping young people succeed.
- Understand that change takes time and are able to celebrate small achievements.
- Want to make a lasting difference in a young person's life.
Why Join Our Home?
The young people we support need adults who won't give up on them when things get difficult. In return, you'll have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships, support life-changing progress, and be part of a team that helps young people move towards brighter, more independent futures. If you're looking for a role with purpose, challenge, and the opportunity to make a genuine impact, we'd love to hear from you.
