Who you’ll be supporting & more about the role:
About Me: Hi, I’m 43, and I’m looking for a small, dedicated team to support me to live my best life. I need 1:1 support, but I really value my personal space. I feel most comfortable when people support me from a distance and often from behind, rather than being in my immediate space. Understanding and respecting this is really important to me. I live with Autism and a Learning Disability, and I am non-verbal. I communicate in my own ways, and I need a team who are patient, observant, and open to learning how I express myself. Experience in autism and learning disabilities is essential, as is a calm, confident and respectful approach.
What’s Important to Me:
- My sensory needs – I feel best in calm, predictable environments
- Routine – this helps me feel safe and happy
- My personal space – support should feel gentle and non-intrusive
The Things I Enjoy:
- Watching films, especially my favourites
- Listening to the radio
- Food – I’m a big foodie with a sweet tooth! I especially enjoy icing and decorating cakes
My Weekly Routine:
I attend Cumberland Day Service a couple of days a week. Having familiar people around me is important, including my regular driver or taxi. My Mum and Dad also help support me at times.
The Support I Need:
This is a lone working service, so you will need to be confident and reliable. Initially, you will support me through a transition period. Over time, shifts will include: Days, Nights, Waking nights, Weekends.
The Team I’m Looking For:
I’m looking for people who are:
- Calm, patient, and respectful
- Confident in their role, but gentle in their approach
- Able to follow my support plan and routines consistently
- Experienced (or willing to learn) in: Autism, Learning disabilities, Positive Behaviour Support, Total communication
Most importantly, I want a team who will take the time to understand me, respect my space, and support me in a way that feels right for me.
Your values:
The ideal candidate will have a Level 3 in Social Care and strong experience in mental health, autism and sensory communication, and physical health. If you do not have a qualification, you will need to have experience in social care. You will know how to connect with people and be passionate about supporting people to live independently. You will also be a brilliant mentor and share your skills and experiences with your colleagues.
We will develop your talents with a range of specialist training, including the opportunity to learn Positive Behaviour Support methods, Makaton and the Picture Exchange System. During recruitment you will meet the people we support in their home. This will allow you to see their wonderful personalities first-hand and fully understand the level of support that they require.
