Community Health Action of Staten Island (CHASI) drives dramatic improvements in the health of New Yorkers by feeding people who are hungry, healing families broken apart by violence, and bridging the gaps between people and the compassionate health care they deserve. CHASI provides outreach, education, prevention, and direct support services for populations most affected by health disparities – people with low or no income, low-income people with chronic illnesses, people with criminal justice involvement, people who use drugs, domestic violence survivors, people of color, and the LGBTQ community.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Next Step Resource and Recovery Center offers opportunities for people in all stages and forms of recovery to deliver and attend individual and group support activities, initiate, and conduct outreach, and events celebrating recovery and reducing stigma associated with substance use. The Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and hosts several services including Recovery Center peer-driven individual and group recovery services, counseling and case management, overdose prevention services, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented community outreach, education, and the Training Institute at CHASI.
The Recovery Counselor serves as a key clinical member of the Next Step team, providing substance use disorder assessments, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and recovery support services to participants. The Recovery Counselor works collaboratively with Senior Peer Mentors and community partners to support participant engagement and continuity of care.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct comprehensive substance use disorder screenings, assessments, and evaluations for individuals referred through the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office, courthouse engagements, and community-based referrals.
- Develop individualized action plans and treatment recommendations using trauma-informed and person-centered approaches.
- Provide individual and group counseling using evidence-based interventions focused on substance use, relapse prevention, and recovery support.
- Facilitate recovery-oriented skill building and psychoeducational group activities.
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support to program participants as needed.
- Conduct follow-up and aftercare calls to support sustained engagement and recovery.
- Coordinate referrals and linkages to treatment, ancillary, and supportive services.
- Escort and accompany participants to treatment providers, court appearances, and community-based services as needed.
- Participate in weekly case review meetings with court partners and other external stakeholders.
- Provide guidance and support to Senior Peer Mentors related to participant engagement and service coordination.
- Complete all required program documentation accurately and in a timely manner using Salesforce and other approved systems.
- Perform all functions in alignment with CHASI’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values.
- Other duties as requested or at the needs of the program and/or agency.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) required. Candidates actively working toward their Full CASAC (CASAC-T) with at least three years of experience supporting individuals with substance use needs will also be considered.
- High school diploma or equivalency required, associate or bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field preferred.
- Experience providing counseling, recovery support, or case management services to individuals with substance use disorders.
- Experience working with justice-involved populations strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and motivational interviewing practices.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred.

Pay & Benefits: $46,300–$51,300 annually, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. Additionally, we offer an excellent benefits package that includes:
