About CFS

Community Furniture Stores is a grassroots charity which works to alleviate furniture and digital poverty in North Yorkshire. We have three stores in York, Scarborough and Selby which sell pre-loved and new furniture and household items at affordable rates to people in our local communities. We reuse and repair donated items through our carpentry workshops and run an IT ReUse project to get equipment to people who would otherwise be digitally excluded. In each store, we provide volunteering opportunities for people to learn new skills, grow in confidence and be part of a team.

About IT ReUse

IT ReUse collects, refurbishes and redistributes digital devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones to individuals in the city of York who are at risk of digital and financial exclusion. We collect donated items from individuals and corporates and follow a fully audited process to certifiably erase them, repair as necessary and preload with appropriate software. We also provide people with internet connectivity packages to ensure they can get online once they have their device. People in need are referred to us by social workers and other agencies who have assessed the needs of the person referred. We then ensure that the equipment matches their needs and is distributed to them in a timely manner.

In addition to the provision of IT equipment, we provide training and volunteering opportunities to people who are keen to learn new skills and be part of a community project. We currently have around 15 volunteers who support the project. Last year, we refurbished and distributed over 300 devices, provided 200 internet connectivity packages and saved over 1 metric tonne of e-waste from landfill/incineration. Four of our volunteers also moved on into employment. This is a great time to join the IT ReUse project as we refocus the workshop to ensure we are having the greatest impact in our local communities.

About the role

You will be responsible for overseeing the management and growth of the IT Reuse Project. The focus of the role will be on expanding the reach of the project into our local communities, developing partnerships with other local organisations and streamlining processes to improve our efficiency. You will also line manage our IT Technician who leads on all the repairs and technical elements of the project. This means, while we’d hope you have some technical experience, it is not essential to the role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all operations of the IT ReUse Project including the line management of our IT Technician
  • Build partnerships and relationships with local organisations and charities to increase our reach into the local community
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to increase supply of donations of IT equipment e.g. corporate partnerships, donation boxes
  • Review, streamline, manage and, if necessary, develop new processes to ensure we are operating as effectively and efficiently as possible
  • Increase awareness of the project in the local community
  • Be the face of the project externally, attending networking events and increasing our local presence
  • Working with our Volunteer Coordinator and IT Technician, recruit and develop a rota of skilled volunteers who can support the running of the scheme
  • Ensure all relevant health and safety and environmental standards are met and that risks in the work are identified and managed
  • Any other tasks as required
