Location: Somerset
Pay Rate: £41 per hour (via umbrella)
Contract: Full Time

About the Role
As an Approved Mental Health Professional, you will undertake and coordinate Mental Health Act assessments across Somerset, ensuring individuals receive timely support that safeguards their legal rights and wellbeing. Working within a centralised AMHP hub, you will apply a social model approach to mental health practice, promoting community-based solutions wherever possible and supporting the use of the least restrictive options. You will work closely with health professionals, police, housing services and social care colleagues to manage complex situations and make robust, legally defensible decisions. The role also involves preparing statutory documentation, liaising with service users, carers and nearest relatives, and contributing to innovative approaches that reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and reliance on police powers. Outside normal working hours, AMHPs support the wider Adult Social Care Out of Hours Service, including responding to urgent social care needs and emergency housing situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and undertake Mental Health Act assessments, ensuring statutory timescales are met.
- Act as the Single Point of Access for Mental Health Act assessment requests on a rota basis.
- Assess and manage significant risk, applying sound professional judgement and legal reasoning.
- Arrange voluntary and compulsory hospital admissions while actively pursuing alternatives wherever appropriate.
- Complete statutory documentation, including tribunal reports, guardianship applications, Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) and court statements.
- Liaise effectively with individuals, carers, nearest relatives and partner agencies, managing differing perspectives sensitively.
- Work collaboratively with Community Mental Health Services, Home Treatment Teams, police, housing providers and voluntary sector partners.
- Participate in a 24/7 rota, including overnight, weekend and lone-working shifts.
- Support Adult Social Care Out of Hours activity, including emergency housing provision.
