Role Overview
The Sales / Systems Engineer (SE) has a vital, technically-focused role within the European Datacenter Sales team. You will drive the growth of our Hyperscale and Named Account business across Europe by providing expert pre-sales and post-sales technical assistance. As a key technical representative, you will bridge the gap between commercial strategy and engineering, working directly with customers, consultants, and installers to position high-performance connectivity solutions. This role requires a hands-on expert who can lead from the front, deliver high-impact presentations, and troubleshoot complex infrastructure on-site.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Sales & Customer Care
- Strategic Pre- & Post-Sales Support: Partner closely with sales teams to provide deep application engineering support for strategic Hyperscale and Named Accounts.
- Relationship Management: Establish strong, trusted-advisor relationships with local customer engineering and operations departments to get CommScope specified into upcoming projects.
- Customer Advocacy: Act as a critical liaison between customers and internal manufacturing, quality, and product line management (PLM) teams to track and resolve technical custom requests.
- Solution Guidance & Hands-on Field Support
- Site Surveys & Troubleshooting: Perform on-site surveys and rapid quality troubleshooting for installations using CommScope materials.
- Testing & Diagnostics: Utilize and interpret OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) and LSPM (Light Source & Power Meter) equipment and trace data to solve field issues.
- Field Trials & Product Guidance: Lead field trials, product demonstrations, and inspect installations to develop on-site warranty certification documentation.
- Presentation, Training & Enablement
- High-Impact Presentations: Create and deliver technical presentations and solution workshops tailored to both deep technical experts and commercial stakeholders.
- Training & Education: Create dedicated training materials and conduct hands-on training sessions for installation partners, end-users, and internal sellers.
- Industry Thought Leadership: Contribute to product literature maintenance, design guides, or media activities to enhance CommScope's position in the Data Center, Cloud, and AI markets.
- Engineering Support
- Product Development: Assist in the design of new Data Center products by feeding field requirements back to engineering, helping create CAD drawings, and drafting technical specifications.
- Documentation: Maintain precise documentation for Fiber Optic and Copper-based telecommunication systems.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Formally trained as a Communications Electronic Engineer, Electrician, Telecommunications Technician, or possess equivalent practical field experience.
- Industry Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience within the telecommunications cabling industry, with specific depth in structured cabling design and installation for mid-to-large Data Centers.
- Fiber Optic Expertise (Crucial): Must be exceptionally comfortable with fiber optics from both a theoretical and practical perspective. This includes hands-on experience handling, terminating, inspecting, cleaning, and repairing both single fiber and ribbon fiber.
- Infrastructure Knowledge: Mandatory, comprehensive knowledge of Telecom Carrier, Telecom Exchanges, and Data Center infrastructures (including functional areas like MDA, HDA, EDA, ZDA, and EF).
- Language Skills: Excellent fluent English language skills are necessary. Fluency in other European languages (e.g., German, French) is a distinct advantage.
- Software Proficiency: Experienced user of MS Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio).
Desired Attributes & Preferred Skills
- Nvidia Reference Architecture: In-depth knowledge or familiarity is highly desirable.
- Technical Advancements: Working knowledge of networking (Routing, Switching, Storage) and local structured cabling standards (e.g., ISO 11801, EN 50173).
- Operational Standards: Knowledge of Project Management, Quality Management, and Electrical/Mechanical facilities installation is an advantage.
- Design Tools & Systems: Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD LT) and SAP is an advantage.
- Certifications: Preferred professional certifications include BICSI RCDD, BICSI DCDC, or equivalent data center design credentials.
Soft Skills & Working Style
- Audience Adaptability: Strong, confident presenter capable of commanding a room, whether leading a granular technical workshop or pitching to commercial executives.
- Commercial Awareness: While highly technical, you possess a solid understanding of commercial situations and sales goals, enabling you to strategically position solutions to meet project objectives.
- Flexibility & Resilience: A collaborative team player who thrives as an individual contributor but can adapt quickly to changing account needs across regional boundaries.
Location, Travel & Availability
- Base Location: Flexible within Europe. While there is significant business in the UK, a base in mainland Europe near emerging metro hubs is highly valued to allow efficient travel via train or car.
- Travel Capacity: Willingness and ability to travel frequently across Europe (up to 50%) to attend customer meetings, trade shows, and installation sites.
- On-Site Flexibility: Willingness to work long hours on-site when critical troubleshooting, field trials, or project deadlines require it.
