Responsibilities

  • Work directly with management and maintenance staff to schedule and complete routine maintenance projects on time.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise classified and seasonal staff, volunteers, and program participants.
  • Oversee maintenance of buildings, trails, and grounds, including tools, equipment, and preventive repairs performed by staff.
  • Ensure effective operation of all park facilities and perform hands‑on preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring park budgets, including maintenance projects and the annual operating plan.
  • Use maintenance management software for timekeeping, scheduling, task assignment, procurement, and accident reporting.
  • Manage grounds, trails, construction, site improvement projects, and natural resource management with assigned construction/site improvement projects.
  • Perform outdoor physical work, including frequent lifting up to 50 lb, climbing, and exposure to weather, dust, animals, and insects.
  • Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications and wear uniform and law‑enforcement equipment in compliance with DCR standards.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of prioritizing operations and staffing based on seasonal needs.
  • Experience managing, supervising, and training staff or volunteers with scheduling and task assignment to meet standards.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, painting, and groundskeeping tasks.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working in teams and providing customer service to the general public.
  • Must complete the agency‑required Basic Law Enforcement Academy and obtain DCJS certification within 18 months of hire.
  • At least 21 years old, U. S. citizen, high school graduate or GED.
  • Must be or become a Sworn Conservation Officer and attend a 21‑week Law Enforcement Academy in Salem, VA.
  • Successful completion of a physical agility test, behavioral assessment, and physical exam.
  • No felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions; no positive drug screening results.
  • Additional Considerations
  • Current Virginia DCJS law‑enforcement officer certification.
  • Practical experience in custodial maintenance (cleaning facilities, restrooms, housekeeping).
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Required to live in park housing and maintain lease, insurance, and safety compliance.
