Overview

The staff psychiatrist serves as the leader of a Treatment Team on the Geriatric Unit and provides direct medical and psychiatric care for patients assigned to the Treatment Team.

The psychiatrist provides consultation to colleagues, supervision of nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants as requested, and participates in the Medical Professional Staff organization.

The role requires comprehensive knowledge of current developments and techniques in diagnosing and treating general medical illnesses; a basic knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatry; ability to lead treatment teams; ability to communicate effectively with medical/psychiatric colleagues and other disciplines in patient care; and the ability to work in a secure environment with individuals experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or forensic/legal involvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a Treatment Team on the Geriatric Unit and provide direct medical and psychiatric care for patients on the team.
  • Provide consultation to colleagues and supervise nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants as requested.
  • Participate in the Medical Professional Staff organization.
  • Apply current knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of general medical illnesses and psychiatric care; communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Work in a secure environment with individuals experiencing acute mental illness and/or forensic/legal involvement.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Current DEA certificate.
  • Completion of an approved residency program in Psychiatry.
  • Either current BLS or ACLS certification; ACLS is required for on-call MOD coverage at night, weekends, or holidays.
  • Additional Considerations
  • Certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is preferred but not required.
  • Experience and/or fellowship with geriatrics is preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate satisfactory training, skill, expertise, and knowledge in the treatment of psychiatric patients.
  • Work experience with inpatient psychiatric populations is preferred.
