Safety And Occupational Health Specialist

You will serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in the Command Navy Region of NAVSTA.

Duties:

• You will identify mishap causes and hazards to implement remedial measures.
• You will make recommendations to managers concerning safety program requirements, policies, and improvements to reduce mishap occurrences.
• You will maintain the safety of employees using knowledge of occupational safety and health policies, directives, regulations, protocols and requirements.
• You will conduct follow-up inspections to determine that all unsafe conditions have been corrected.
• You will talk with safety and occupational health specialists and other commands to identify hazards related to new equipment.
• You will compose letters and special reports regarding safety and occupational health issues.
• You will implement explosives safety regulations and procedures to minimize potential safety hazards.

Requirements:

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level.
• Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
• You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
• You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.

Qualifications:

• Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
• Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
• Analyze data on work operations, mishaps, and safety practices to prepare reports of findings that propose corrective measures for unsafe conditions and hazardous work practices.
• Investigate mishaps, hazard reports, and unsafe or unhealthful working conditions to protect personnel and property.
• Advise personnel of safety and occupational health measures to control or eliminate hazardous operating processes.
• Conduct safety and occupational health inspections and surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of the unit safety program.

Education:

• In lieu of general/specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:
• For the GS-11: Have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in safety or occupational health fields or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
• OR Have successfully completed three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in safety or occupational health fields or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following disciplines.
• OR Have successfully completed an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled.
• OR Have a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
