In joining us, you will be helping to create cutting-edge technologies that will improve how we diagnose and treat brain disorders, ultimately improving and saving the lives of patients across the world.

The Role:

As an Optical Research Scientist at CoMind, you will join a highly talented and interdisciplinary team working at the interface of optics, engineering, neuroscience and clinical neuromonitoring. This role is ideal for an experimentalist early in their career who is eager to contribute to the development of cutting-edge medical devices. At CoMind, all team members work at least 4 days per week from our new Kings Cross offices, plus a flexible work-from-home day.

Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory and in-vivo testing and implementation of new optical neuromonitoring systems and methods
  • Supporting the development of new optical and electronic systems
  • Supporting the development of new experimental methodologies to validate and optimise the performance of our medical devices
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to inform and support design decisions
  • Performing in-vivo optical measurements on healthy volunteers, and experiments using tissue-mimicking phantoms
  • Processing and analyzing the resultant optical data to extract key signals and parameters
  • Summarizing findings, compiling reports, and presenting results to the wider research, product, and leadership teams

Skills & Experience:

  • Background in physics, medical physics, biomedical engineering or related discipline
  • Significant experience undertaking laboratory testing and development of physiological measurement systems, including experimental design, device application, data acquisition and analysis
  • Hands-on experience with in-vivo physiological signal acquisition using experimental/prototype technologies
  • Fluency in at least one programming language used for data collection and analysis (e.g. Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW)
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team
  • Outstanding communication skills, including in scientific writing and report generation

Nice to have:

  • Experience with tissue optics (e.g. diffuse correlation spectroscopy, near-infrared spectroscopy, photoplethysmography, optical coherence tomography)
  • A PhD in biomedical engineering, medical physics, or a related discipline
  • Experience with neuromonitoring, especially non-invasive neuromonitoring devices and the associated data
  • Experience in acquisition of physiological data in clinical environments
  • A strong understanding of device control systems and hardware synchronization techniques
