37 hours per week, Permanent Post

£29,0675 to £30,813 per annum (inclusive of £2,859 Distant Islands Allowance per annum)

Overview

A Roadworker vacancy has arisen within the Comhairle Roads Maintenance Team. The role covers the Isle of Lewis and throughout the Western Isles as required, providing comprehensive maintenance of roads, footpaths and other infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Carry out specialist tasks including Bitmac surface patching, sign maintenance, road marking, ditching and drainage works, safety barrier maintenance, and Winter gritting service.
• Drive HGV and non-HGV vehicles; operate, check and clean specialist plant and equipment.
• Complete daily paper and digital records.
• Participate in the Roads Winter Service and Roads Emergency Service, working flexibly on an out‑of‑hours standby rota.
• Manage other personnel as instructed during emergency incidents.

Qualifications & Skills

• Recent construction or practical work experience.
• Ability to quickly learn new skills and methods of working.
• Full UK category B driving licence (required); a HGV category C licence is desirable but not essential – training will be provided.
• Clear medical assessment for driving and work duties.
• Opportunity to undertake training courses and assessments to achieve qualifications such as SVQ and NPORS.
