Purpose of the role
Ofcom’s Online Information Advisory Committee is a statutory body established under the Online Safety Act 2023. The Committee advises Ofcom on how regulated service providers should deal with disinformation, misinformation, and the use of transparency powers. It also informs the media‑literacy functions of the Communications Act, supporting people to understand the impact of disinformation and to reduce their exposure. As a critic and adviser, the Committee offers evidence‑based guidance to the Board, publishes advice notes, and ensures that work is grounded in evidence, considers user interests and provider impacts.
Committee membership
Members are part‑time, drawn from diverse backgrounds, and contribute to the Committee’s work programme. Up to two members will be appointed on a fixed term of three years beginning 1 September 2026.
Responsibilities
- Members will attend Committee meetings, provide evidence‑based advice to the Board, support Ofcom teams, review policy evidence, help shape guidance on misinformation, disinformation, media literacy and public disorder, and prepare reports and advice notes.
Essential competencies
- Experience producing high‑quality, policy‑influencing research or work related to misinformation, disinformation, foreign interference or related areas.
- Ability to understand, articulate and represent the varied needs and views of citizens and consumers.
- Ability to consider fundamental human rights, especially freedom of expression, in regulation.
- Understanding of the feasibility and implications of work on misinformation for regulated services.
- Strong communication skills to make effective contributions to discussions.
- Ability to work as part of a committee and support teams through complex and contested questions.
We are particularly interested in candidates with skills, expertise or experience in any of the following areas:
- Analysing or countering online mis/disinformation and public disorder.
- Analysing or countering information‑based threats to elections.
- Researching, evaluating or implementing interventions to counter misinformation or disinformation.
- Working with traditional media or providers of online services that may be in‑scope of the Online Safety Act.
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, including how such systems can be used to create and spread misinformation and how they could be deployed to address it.
Remuneration and working arrangements
The annual remuneration for a member of the Committee is £3,500 for an anticipated commitment of up to 10 days per year, including meetings, team support and preparatory work. The Committee operates on a hybrid working basis, and members may travel to London with expenses covered.
