Purpose of the Role
Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for UK communications. The Advisory Committee for Wales provides advice to Ofcom colleagues on interests and views of people living in Wales across our regulatory responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Attend up to five committee meetings per year (primarily in Cardiff) and any sub‑group or informal meetings as required.
- Participate in stakeholder meetings, conference calls, and provide input on consultation responses.
- For Chair: lead and chair meetings effectively and guide responses to consultations.
Essential Skills & Competencies
- Recent knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the communications sectors regulated by Ofcom, particularly broadcasting and media.
- Understanding of Ofcom’s role and responsibilities within a complex political landscape.
- Aware of Wales’ economy, society, and culture.
- Ability to appreciate and articulate diverse needs and views of citizens and consumers in Wales.
- For at least one role: confident communication in Welsh (essential).
- Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a committee.
Chair‑Specific Competencies
- Effective verbal and written communication to guide responses to consultations.
- Capability to chair meetings effectively.
- Awareness of evolving technology, politics, and changing needs of communications users in Wales and their effects on policy‑making decisions.
Time Commitment & Remuneration
- General Committee Member: up to 12 days per year; annual fee £3,000.
- Chair: up to 24 days per year; annual fee £8,400.
- Members are paid under PAYE.

Members must act in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Advisory Committees. Members may not be directly employed by organisations regulated or licensed by Ofcom or derive the majority of their employment income from such a company. Applicants must demonstrate personal integrity and conduct that accords with the Seven Principles of Public Life. Potential or actual conflicts of interest should be declared and discussed at interview.
