Shipyard Production Planner and Scheduler
Purpose:
As a Shipyard Production Planner/Scheduler at Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc., you will play a crucial role in assisting the planning and preparing production schedules utilizing various systems to ensure development and adherence to a master schedule. Additionally, the position assists the development and implementation of relevant planning procedures, policies and working practices through all areas of responsibility and will regularly interface with various departments and teams across the organization to ensure on-time delivery of fabrication projects.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position may require limited travel.
Job Description:
- Supports daily operations within the assigned shop to support vessel repair, fabrication, production efficiency, and safe work execution.
- Assist Shop Management with ship repair projects for both commercial and government clients, planning through execution to completion.
- Creates work packages, drawings, specifications and contract requirements to ensure work is properly prepared for execution.
- Monitors production progress, schedule performance and shop capacity; recommend priority adjustments as needed to maintain workflow and delivery commitments.
- Collaborates with Production Trades, Project Management, Quality, and subcontractors to support efficient execution of shipyard operations.
- Coordinates upcoming work activities, material readiness, technical support requirements and yard priorities to maintain efficient shop operations.
- Supports short-range production planning and sequencing of work to maximize efficiency and minimize delays.
- Responsible for collection of physical progress each week for their jobs
- Review and edit Test and Inspection Plans, Required Reports List and then execute, manage Test & Inspection Plans.
- Draft and submit accurate, clear & concise reports as required.
- Manages and maintains various phases of vessel production schedules; reviews, implements, and maintains the tools and techniques necessary to analyze the impact of proposed schedule changes.
- Tracks schedule changes and assess their impact on production timelines.
- Determines the status of assigned projects and updates and maintains project data, including progress tracking and manpower budgets.
- Assists planning requirements, yard priorities, and production schedules to sequence the next 10–14 days of work; provides manpower projections to shop foremen and upper management.
- Sets a personal example by wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with company guidelines at all times and correcting/documenting noncompliance when observed.
- Ensures all Company Safe Operations initiatives and procedures are executed, including safe work planning, safety briefings, near-miss documentation and discussions, and housekeeping practices.
- Promotes participation in the Safe Operations culture at the deck plate level and encourages employees to remain vigilant and vocal regarding safety issues, concerns, and suggestions.
- Works independently to complete assigned responsibilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned based on workload demands.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills and reliability to consistently meet deadlines.
- Must be able to work overtime as required to meet operational deadlines.
Qualifications:
- Experience in computerized planning and resource management.
- Minimum of 10 years of Ship Repair experience, including planning, scheduling, and production efforts aligned with a specific trade or shop discipline.
- Must have strong technical knowledge of ship repair processes, industry regulations and safety standards.
- Must have excellent leadership communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Prior experience coordinating production operations, shop workflow, or vessel repair activities preferred.
- Strong PC skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Microsoft Project.
- Strong problem-solving skills with experience in work sequence deconfliction.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a shipyard, steel fabrication, or heavy manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with ERP, MRP, or production planning systems
- Understanding of material management, inventory control, and manufacturing workflows
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal Travel; 15% or less.
Physical Requirements:
- Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Able to sit and work on a computer for long periods of time.
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
- Communicating with others to exchange information.
- Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available, but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
