Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Mobile Crane Operator to support operations in Norfolk, VA.
Job Description:
- Operate mobile and hydraulic portal cranes in a safe effective manner.
- Operate overhead cranes.
- Train on friction cranes and other nonstandard equipment.
- Operate traveling or stationary overhead cranes to lift, move, and position loads, such as machinery, equipment, products, and solid or bulk materials, using hoisting attachments, such as hooks, slings, or buckets.
- Hold employees in the basket to conduct ship repairs.
- Observe load hookup and determine safety of the load.
- Manipulate or depress crane controls, such as pedals, levers, and buttons, to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement according to written, verbal, or signal instructions.
- Inspect crane for defective parts and notify supervisor of defects or malfunctions.
- Review daily work and special loading instructions.
- Determine load weights and check them against lifting capacities in order to prevent overload.
- Use hand and arm signals for installing, handling, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
- Board ships via stairs, ladders, and gangways with tool bags and needed equipment.
- Control cost in assigned area of responsibility.
- Other duties/rigging duties may be assigned as workload dictates.
Qualifications:
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least five (5) years of industrial crane operating experience and at least three (3) years' experience in rigging.
- Must have NCCCO mobile crane certification.
- Must have knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with crane operations.
- Must be willing/able to operate many varieties of cranes to include 60T-110T mobiles, 15T electric-hoist wing walls, RT mobile cranes, and 20T track cranes.
- Must have good depth perception and be comfortable working at all heights.
- Must be able to work effectively with others.
- Must have knowledge of crane maintenance and repair.
- Must have the ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
- Must be able to use measuring instruments.
- Must be able to work independently to complete responsibilities.
- Must have regular, reliable attendance.
Desired Qualifications:
- Prefer experience operating a 230T Manitowoc.
- Prefer experience with overhead cranes.
- Prefer Technical Training.
Travel Requirements:
Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including entering and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation.
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
