Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Janitor to support operations beginning at 3:00 a.m. in the steel fabrication shop in Norfolk, VA.

Job Description:

  • Maintain quality of work and customer satisfaction.
  • Respond to customer requests according to established procedures or refer to supervisor.
  • Clean all spills promptly.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Cleaning to include sweeping, shoveling, mopping, scrubbing, and/or raking of ships, bulkheads, compartments, tanks, facilities, dry docks, railways, parking areas, and buildings using industrial vacuums, brooms, shovels, power machines, etc.
  • Perform cleaning services using proper equipment and supplies and follow procedures for safe use and operation.
  • Perform basic cleaning, such as vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, and trash removal of main office building and all other designated office spaces, to include break room areas, hallways and stairs.
  • Moving of furniture cabinets, boxes, and equipment.
  • Perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, windows, walls and glass.
  • Clean facilities, restrooms, common areas, cafeterias / fill all dispensers.
  • Trash collection and transport including lifting and carrying trash, steel, scrap, palettes, wood scraps, and all other trash to proper containers.
  • Use ladders and JLG’s to dust, wash and/or clean fixtures, ceilings, overheads, etc.
  • Clean tables and microwaves.
  • Notify management concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Maintain all floors, i.e., stripping, refinishing and maintenance of various floor types and surfaces.
  • Follow cleaning procedures in a safe manner.
  • Complete all assignments as scheduled / work independently to complete tasks and responsibilities.
  • Maintain equipment in good working condition and return it to the proper storage location after use.
  • May monitor inventory and supply areas and order stock and/or notify supervisor of supplies needed.
  • Maintain grounds and sidewalks to include sweeping walks, raking leaves, cutting grass, removing snow or performing incidental seasonal tasks.
  • Stain removal of sidewalks, rugs, drapes, walls, decks, and floors using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator.
  • Firewatch responsibility and duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two (2) years of experience in building maintenance.
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to use tools and equipment associated with the occupation.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker.
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow instructions.
  • Must be able to work evening hours: 2nd and 3rd shift.
  • Must be able to follow instructions on labels for proper and safe use of chemicals, supplies and equipment.
  • Must be able to follow structured process and procedures, and to learn to use specialized departmental equipment, including that used in custodial services such as scrubbers and buffers.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and respond to questions and requests from customers and others including ability to identify and report product and equipment needs.
  • Must have human relations skills to build effective working relationships.
  • Must be able to manage and accurately track material resources and time and adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in the Steel America Fabrication Shop highly preferred.

Travel Requirements:

  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including entering and moving through manholes.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear.
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions.
  • At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation.
  • Frequent use of respirator.
