1st Class Field Manual Machinist – Steel America
Purpose:
Steel America On-Site Machining, a division of Colonna\’s Shipyard, is seeking 1st Class Manual Field Machinists to work on multiple on & off-site projects in and around Norfolk, VA.
Job Description:
- Routine blueprint reading and technical writing to accomplish work tasks.
- Daily use of tools such as micrometers, height gauges, Vernier calipers, and dividing heads to support tasking.
- Operate machine tools in varying tolerances according to need (from thousands upwards).
- Perform non-routine maintenance and repair of portable machine tools.
- Use hoisting and rigging equipment for heavy pieces such as forklifts and chain falls.
- Determine and apply system tolerances.
- Work tasks will involve:
- Rudders and Steering systems: blue checking, fitting, piano wire alignment, stock straightness, hydraulic and pneumatic controls.
- Bearings and Bushings: lubrication, alignment, dial indicator measurements.
- Engines, Motors, and Generators: diesel engines, turbines, generators, heat exchangers, leak testing.
- Propulsion Shafting: alignment, wear assessment, shaft straightness.
- Seals: gasket, packing, O-rings, tightness testing.
- Valve work: leak testing, seating, gaskets, lapping.
- Propellers: fitting, polishing.
- Pumps: valving, sealing, alignment.
- Deck machinery: gearboxes, bearings, alignments, drivers, sheaves, cables.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent with at least 7 years of Machinist experience.
- Experience with manual lathes and mills.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical documents.
- Strong mechanical skills, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination.
- Clean driving record.
Desired Qualifications:
- Technical training preferred.
Security Requirements:
- Ability to obtain and maintain access to government and military installations, including background checks and clearances.
- Provide necessary documentation for access and clearance.
Travel Requirements:
- Frequent travel, 50% or less.
- International travel may be required occasionally.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift at least 20 lbs and handle heavy equipment.
- Physical agility to work on ships, ladders, in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and at heights.
- Ability to work at sea for extended periods.
- Work may involve high heat, noise, and dirty conditions, including wearing protective gear.
- Operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, handling, reaching, climbing, and working in challenging environments.
