The Role
We are seeking a caring, patient, and committed 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a child within the Pathways Suite at a welcoming mainstream primary school in South Birmingham. The role involves providing tailored support to help the pupil access learning, develop independence, and thrive both academically and emotionally.
You will work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and Pathways staff to deliver individualised support in line with the child’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 support for a pupil with special educational needs within the Pathways Suite and mainstream settings where appropriate
- Support learning activities, adapting tasks to meet individual needs
- Assist with emotional regulation, communication, and social interaction
- Implement strategies recommended by external professionals (e.g. speech and language therapists, occupational therapists)
- Promote positive behaviour and encourage independence
- Ensure the pupil’s safety, wellbeing, and inclusion at all times
- Contribute to observations, progress reviews, and record keeping
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Experience working with children with SEN (e.g. ASD, ADHD, communication or sensory needs)
- A calm, nurturing, and patient approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- The ability to follow guidance and use structured strategies consistently
- A genuine commitment to supporting children with additional needs
Desirable (but not essential)
- Previous experience in a SEN or resource provision
- Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant or equivalent)
- Training in behaviour support, autism awareness, or communication strategies
