The mission of Facilities Management is to enable the institute to carry out its mission of teaching, research and advisory service by providing cost effective and efficient planning, design, construction, maintenance, safety, and security services throughout the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. Located along the glistening beaches of Gloucester Point, Virginia, VIMS provides research, education, and advisory services to government, citizens, students, and industry in coastal oceans and estuary science. Security Services within Facilities Management is seeking motivated and qualified applicants to apply for their hourly (part-time) Security Guard position. The Security Guard provides security services to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Gloucester Point Campus. Reporting to the Security Officer, the Security Guard works under direct supervision with some independent decision making.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitor campus buildings and grounds to ensure staff, students, and visitors are safe.
- Make inspections of designated priority areas on a routine basis.
- Ensure building security through routine patrol and scheduled locking/unlocking of buildings.
- Provide escort service and parking enforcement.
- Respond to fire alarms, assist during scheduled special events and After Hour functions in the areas of traffic control, maintain static security posts when needed, and assist with parking assignments as requested.
Conditions of Employment
This is an hourly pool position that works variable hours during the week/evenings and/or weekends and when the Campus is closed and requires Security 24/7. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year. This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor. Must meet the physical conditions of the job. Position requires mobility to use stairs. Requires both attention to events and sitting patiently and discreetly while they occur, sometimes for extended periods of time. Must be able to maintain a valid driver's license. This position has been designated as essential and may require reporting to work when the university is officially closed.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION / LICENSE: High School graduate or equivalent. A valid driver's license.
COMPETENCIES / EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and implement security plans.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service.
- Ability to respond promptly and exercise sound judgment in situations where required.
- Demonstrated experience in a security position or a related field (e.g., law enforcement, military, etc.) or experience with building security and protection.
Preferred Qualifications
COMPETENCIES / EXPERIENCE:
- Ability to be firearm certified.
- Basic computer proficiency, with the ability to use web-based applications.
- Experience working in a campus environment.
Advertised Pay Range: up to $16.50 per hour. All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
