We are looking for two Band 5 Mental Health Nurses to work on Colne Ward Riverside Centre. Colne Ward is an 8 bedded male PICU unit. Colne Ward recently obtained QNPICU accreditation from the Royal College of Psychiatry.

We are seeking nurses with strong leadership skills who can work independently but also collaboratively within the team. The role requires the ability to prioritise, make sound decisions under pressure, good communication skills, and the ability to work at times without direct supervision. Experience working in a Mental Health setting is desirable.

Main duties of the job

Band 5 Nurses work closely with service users, their families, friends and carers and contribute to how people experience our services. Band 5 Nurses are expected to be kind, professional and informative, and to contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

  • keeping the people who use our services as safe as possible through sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments
  • ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence-based policies and procedures
  • ensuring service users have a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership throughout the care planning process

The ward is actively engaging in Quality Improvement projects to continually improve service-user experiences and outcomes. You will have the opportunity to engage in these projects and be supported to identify new ones as we evolve. Colne Ward will provide ample scope for progression into more clinical and managerial positions.

Job responsibilities

Patient Safety

  • Band 5 nurses contribute to safe and reliable services by using clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep service users safe.
  • Safeguarding: recognise and respond when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse, recognise limits, ask for help and escalate concerns when necessary
  • Escalating safety concerns and acting as advocates for service users
  • Being open and transparent about practice
  • Supervising the work of others
  • Reflecting on practice to identify safety or quality improvements
  • Working with others to create a culture of continuous improvement
  • Maintaining accurate, legible records
  • Maintaining mandatory training compliance

The NMC plays an important role in safeguarding the public; all nurses, including Band 5 nurses, are expected to register with the NMC and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct.

  • Working with patients and families throughout care planning, including risk and needs assessment

  • Contributing to high-performing teams by communicating well with all team members

  • NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse

  • Ability to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team, present cases, update actions, and participate in handovers
  • Maintaining accurate, timely and legible clinical records in line with CNWL policies
  • Ability to de-escalate situations
  • Ability to use electronic patient records and Microsoft Word for letters/reports
  • Safeguarding and advocacy

  • Participation in management and clinical supervision

Knowledge

  • Up-to-date knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and amendments
  • Knowledge of the NMC Code of Conduct
  • Working knowledge of the Care Programme Approach framework
  • Knowledge of new developments in nursing
  • Risk assessment and management knowledge
  • Current developments in mental health care and nursing practice
  • Commitment to treating service users with respect and dignity, culturally sensitive care
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its impact on practice

Experience

  • You do not need previous experience as a registered nurse, but you must be registered as a Mental Health Nurse

Desirable

  • Experience working in a PICU setting
