The Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes. The service is expanding and a new contract has been mobilised. The role involves consultant and RC responsibility for service users, supported by a multi‑disciplinary team and managed by the Clinical Director.

The Mental Health Team at HMP Woodhill delivers an integrated Mental Health Service, comprising a Primary Mental Health (PMH) team and a Secondary Mental Health in‑reach team (MHIRT). The post holder will perform psychiatric assessments, provide evidence‑based interventions, review medication and offer specialist advice on complex cases.

Main Duties
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments and provide clinical care for prisoners with complex needs.
  • Deliver up to three outpatient clinics per week (3–4 patients each) and one ward round weekly.
  • Assess and treat patients in the inpatient unit (up to 12 patients, including transfer to psychiatric hospital).
  • Carry out medication reviews and psychiatric/medication reviews without maintaining a formal caseload.
  • Provide clinical leadership, multidisciplinary liaison, and support for high‑risk assessments and crisis interventions.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping and comply with data protection and information governance standards.
  • Apply the Mental Health Act (sections 48/49 and 47/49) and other relevant legislation and guidelines.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, QI projects and service development activities.
  • Support the Clinical Director in financial management and service planning.

The Mental Health Team works closely with prison staff and external services to provide person‑centred care that promotes positive health and social outcomes, resettlement and reduced re‑offending. HMP Woodhill is a Category B prison with a Category A function, containing a Close Supervision Centre, a Separation Centre and a Protected Witness Unit.

Job Description and Responsibilities
  • Assessment (including risk), treatment, care planning and multi‑agency liaison for people with mental health problems in the prisons.
  • Conduct Mental Capacity Assessments and contribute to emergency interventions.
  • Collaborate with manager, psychologists and other lead professionals to ensure safe and supportive care.
  • Participate in ACCT (self‑harm/suicide prevention) processes where relevant.
  • Follow NICE guidelines and CNWL Trust policy; practice in accordance with the Mental Health Act.
  • Engage in audit, quality improvement and research activities; support service reviews and planning.
  • Maintain professional registration and adhere to GMC, MHA Section 12(2) approval, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in annual appraisal and CPD activities; support financial management of the service.
Person SpecificationEssential
  • Fully registered with the GMC and a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months.
  • Approved clinician status (Section 12MHA).
  • Primary Medical Degree and CCT in Forensic.
  • Clinical leadership/management experience and a track record of improving quality.
  • Excellent clinical, communication and decision‑making skills; able to manage conflict and complex situations.
  • Experience with the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
  • IT literate and able to work constructively within an MDT.
Desirable
  • Experience of job planning, conflict resolution and performance management.
  • Higher degree (MSc, LLM, MD, PhD) or MRCPsych qualification.
  • Management and leadership qualification.
  • Evidence of leadership in clinical audit, research, publications or service improvement.
  • Knowledge of procurement, contract management and regulation.
