CNWL is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist working in our 18‑bedded mixed gender ward, Shore Ward. This full‑time position is ideal for someone wanting to broaden their experience of acute psychiatry and develop their clinical skills in a supportive and challenging environment.

Main duties

  • Provide a comprehensive assessment and treatment package of care to all patients with a view to facilitating early discharge from hospital.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the inpatient service to continuously improve the quality of acute care.
  • Collaborate with adult mental health services in Brent to ensure a coordinated, effective and person‑centred care pathway.

About the service

Brent Adult Mental Health Service provides a range of services for adults within community and hospital settings. Our community services have recently transformed to improve the quality of care received by people with mental health needs in line with the NHS Long Term Plan, toward provision of more integrated, organisation and place‑based care.

Key service areas include:

  • Acute in‑patients (3 wards – 47 beds) and PICU (11 beds) – Park Royal Centre for Mental Health
  • Community Mental Health Hubs – three hubs serving the three GP networks
  • Early Intervention Service – Fairlight Avenue, Harlesden
  • Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) – Park Royal
  • Mental Health Act Team (AMHP Team) – Park Royal
  • Integrated Psychology and Psychotherapy Services – embedded within teams
  • Community Forensic Service – collaboration with West London NHS Trust
  • Brent Talking Therapies, Community Collaboration and health inequalities team, mental health social team delivering AMHP, hospital discharge, placements and complex case management

Job responsibilities

The postholder will be responsible for providing sole and dedicated consultant psychiatric care to people admitted to Shore Ward. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing comprehensive assessment and treatment, leading to early discharge
  • Medical input, consultation and clinical leadership across the ward
  • Care planning and risk assessment for patients under the CPA process
  • Acting as the Responsible Clinician, attending and writing reports for Mental Health Tribunals and Managers hearings
  • Regular liaison with Community Consultants, Psychological Medicine, CMHT and CRHTT to ensure timely discharge
  • Participating in quality improvement and service evaluation projects; encouraging research for service improvement
  • Leading the multidisciplinary team, collaborating at clinical and operational levels

Teaching and training

Actively involved in postgraduate teaching programmes, including a local academic meeting (Wednesday lunchtime) featuring a Journal Club and case presentations. Support medical students from Imperial School of Medicine and work experience students. Appropriately trained consultants may serve as Educational Supervisors for core and higher trainees from the St Marys training scheme.

Essential qualifications

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable qualifications

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • MRCPsych or MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists

Additional clinical qualifications

Eligibility – Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with licence to practice at appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months
  • Approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months

Eligibility – Desirable

  • In good standing with GMC regarding any warnings or conditions on practice

Clinical skills, knowledge and experience – Essential

  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent bio‑psycho‑social clinical skills and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Decision‑making based on evidence, experience and contribution of others
  • Capable of meeting duties under MHA and MCA

Clinical skills, knowledge and experience – Desirable

  • Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service

Transport – Essential

  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence or provides evidence of proposed alternative
