Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion is seeking a motivated and skilled Casual Technician in Construction to join our Construction Curriculum Area at our Ammanford Campus.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a dynamic and industry-connected department delivering high-quality construction education and training across building crafts, building services, technical construction, and higher education programmes. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with practical construction industry experience, strong technical skills, and a commitment to supporting outstanding teaching and learning. The ideal candidate will have a minimum Level 2/3 qualification in Construction trades or relevant field, experience in the industry and a passion for learning and development.
Within this role you will mainly support the Construction and Building Services Carpentry team but will also be expected to contribute to all technical support requirements within the Curriculum Area.
Key Responsibilities- Provide technical assistance and support for teaching and learning within your area, responding to the needs of students, academic staff and the relevant course leader/s.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment, complying with Health and Safety regulations.
- Prepare, maintain and update relevant Health & Safety documentation such as Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, COSHH records and equipment maintenance records, in liaison with course teams.
- Maintain, upgrade and service equipment as planned, required or requested; wood machining and other construction related static and portable machinery and equipment.
- Receive relevant training as and when necessary.
- Ensure the care, control, maintenance and security of course equipment, materials and stock.
- Maintain stores inventory for consumables, equipment and delivery resources.
- Carry out ordering of stock in line with college financial procedures and update online ordering database.
- Provide a stores issue service for course consumables and an issue and return service for all departmental equipment and other course items.
- Participate in course team; student consultative committees; and curriculum area meetings as required.
- Carry out duties which support marketing and promotion of course programme.
- Support lecturers and students in undertaking workshop-based activities, in line with agreed timetable.
- Minimum Level 2/3 Qualification in Construction trades.
- Appropriate Health & Safety training (or willingness to undertake appropriate training).
- Recent and relevant experience of the technical field/s concerned.
- Good communicator with diplomacy and tact.
- Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Ability to work harmoniously with learners and colleagues.
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Excellent punctuality and ability to work flexibly.
- GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent.
- IOSH Managing Safely (If you are not IOSH qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible).
- PUWER Training (If you are not PUWER qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible).
- First Aid qualification (If you are not First Aid qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible).
- A good understanding of the technical support role in Further Education.
- Be competent in the use and maintenance of static and portable machinery and equipment associated with general Construction/Plumbing practices.
- Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1.
- Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1.
You will receive 28 days holiday, plus bank holidays and five closure days which totals at 41 days holiday per year. You also receive an additional 4 days after 5 years service.
