Key Responsibilities

• Technical Maintenance & Machinery Support
  • Perform routine and reactive electrical maintenance on a wide range of workshop machinery, including mechanical machinery (e.g., motors for lathes, milling machines, pillar drills) and automated systems (CNC machinery and PLC-controlled equipment).
  • Diagnose electrical faults, replace components, and ensure all equipment is calibrated and 'ready for use' for student cohorts.
  • Maintain, upgrade and service equipment as planned, required or requested.
• Panel Building & PLC Integration
  • Build, wire, and test electrical control panels to industry standards.
  • Assist in the setup and wiring of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and associated HMI/sensor networks for educational rigs.
  • Interpret and update electrical schematics and circuit diagrams.
• Workshop & Instructional Support
  • Provide technical support to students and lecturers during practical workshop sessions.
  • Prepare materials, components, and specialised kits for electrical installation or electronics practical.
  • Demonstrate correct tool usage and safe working practices to learners.
• Compliance, H&S, and Operations
  • Conduct regular Health & Safety (H&S) inspections, including PAT testing and fixed wire checks where appropriate.
  • Maintain rigorous compliance documentation and risk assessments for all workshop machinery.
  • Manage departmental stock levels, including sourcing and ordering specialised electrical components and consumables.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and professional workshop environment.
  • Prepare, maintain and update relevant Health & Safety documentation such as Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, COSHH records and equipment maintenance records, in liaison with course teams.
  • Receive relevant training as and when necessary.
  • Ensure the care, control, maintenance and security of course equipment, materials and stock with tools and equipment being stored away after each session.
  • Maintain stores inventory for consumables, equipment and delivery resources.
  • Carry out ordering of stock in line with college financial procedures and update online ordering database.
  • Participate in course team; student consultative committees; and curriculum area meetings as required.
  • Carry out duties which support marketing and promotion of the course programme.
  • Support lecturers and students in undertaking workshop-based activities, in line with agreed timetable.
  • Carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential Criteria:

• Level 3 vocational qualification in electrical/electronic engineering or related engineering discipline.
• GCSE English and Maths at a minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent.
• IOSH Managing Safely (If you are not IOSH qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible).
• Appropriate Health & Safety training (or willingness to undertake appropriate training).
• First Aid Qualification (If you are not First Aid qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible).
• Industrial Background: Proven experience working with industrial 3-phase machinery and control circuits.
• Recent and relevant experience of industrial electrical engineering maintenance.
• Strong skills in panel wiring, crimping, soldering, and the use of diagnostic test equipment (Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, Insulation Testers).
• A good understanding of the technical support role in Further & Higher Education.
• Be competent in the use of 3 phase systems and associated electrical engineering machinery.
• Good communicator with diplomacy and tact.
• Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
• Ability to work harmoniously with students and colleagues.
• Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
• Ability to work flexibly.

Desirable Criteria

• 8th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
• Testing & Inspection Qualification (e.g., C&G 2391).

Welsh Language Requirements:

• Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1 Desirable.
• Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1 Desirable.
