Our client is looking for an experienced Senior Natural Environment Officer (Ecology) for a contract position in Towcester, offering £65 per hour limited, paid via an umbrella company inside IR35. The role can be performed remotely for 3 days a week, with 2 days on-site (Hybrid).
We are particularly keen to recruit someone who has experience of working in local government as an ecologist and commenting on planning applications as part of that role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the provision of appropriate specialist advice on natural environment issues, with a technical specialism in ecology.
- Support the production and maintenance of an up-to-date suite of policy documents to guide and set high standards for future development in the area, including developing, maintaining and reviewing local plans, neighbourhood plans and other planning policy documents.
- Support specialist monitoring, research and statistical activities to support the Planning Service.

- Ability to work under pressure, handle stress and meet deadlines.
- Good attention to detail and accurate research skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills; exhibits a clear and comprehensive verbal style.
- Ability to communicate and display consistent professional conduct with a wide range of people, including Senior Management and Councillors.
- Excellent writing skills; exhibits a clear and comprehensible writing style in line with Plain English principles.
- Demonstrate effective use of Office 365 (including Teams, OneDrive, etc.) or willingness to undertake training during the probation period.
- Specialist IT skills: DEF MasterGov or other planning related system, QGIS or other mapping software, and ERP Gold (or other comparable system).
- Good knowledge of planning legislation and guidance.
- Up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation in relation to ecology matters.
- A good understanding of the Local Plan system, including the role and content of national and local policy.
- Developing knowledge of working effectively in a political environment with a range of stakeholders.
- Experience of working in a natural environment.
