Purpose of the Role

In addition to fulfilling all criteria found in the OTM Driver/Fitter/Operator job description, the Team Leader will be a front‑line manager responsible for all aspects of the management of the members of the OTM region allocated to them.

They will train and assess all other members of Colas Rail and provide adequate support and cover for the Regional Operations Manager.

Person Specification

  • Previous working experience with OTM’s and extensive knowledge as an OTM Driver / Operator or Fitter / Operator or Multi–Skilled Operator.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Training, mentoring and coaching ability and willingness.
  • Positive attitude and thrive in a busy, pressurised environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication – ability to lead safety‑critical reporting.
  • Analytical problem solver.
  • Flexible, honest and punctual – able to work weekends, bank holidays and part of a 24/7 shift‑based roster.
  • Willingness to stay away from home (at company expense) when required.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Good computer skills (e. g., Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe).
  • Full knowledge of UK Rail Operations and Standards.

  • Hosting monthly team briefs, keeping the team updated with company news and events.
  • Conducting team Personal Development Reviews (PDRs) annually.

  • Ensuring accurate reporting and recording of real‑time issues, including incidents, accidents and environmental occurrences, in a professional manner and informing appropriate parties in correct timescales.
  • Responsible for machine service faults and failures, escalating to maintenance and communicating operational shift performance issues.
  • Adaptability and Additional Duties
  • Adapt to organisational changes and meet operational requirements.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.
