Colas Rail has been awarded the Mobile Maintenance Train (MMT) contract. This entails the maintenance, operation and driving of a fleet of 8 MMTs based in various parts of the UK. We are looking for a qualified Fitter to work on the Network Rail owned MMT fleet based at Darlington.
What do MMTs do?
MMTs are an essential element of track maintenance, providing a mobile, safe and secure space for personnel fixing track defects. The MMTs carry equipment and materials essential to maintenance to the chosen worksite.
Essential Qualifications
- Level 3 qualification in a mechanical or engineering discipline or engineering background.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Must live near to Darlington.
- Able to work weekends, bank holidays and a mixture of days and nights as part of a shift‑based roster.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Windows.
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience working on Mobile Maintenance Trains.
- Previous railway experience.
- Level 4 in a mechanical/engineering or relevant discipline.
Location and Roster Pattern
You will be required to work a combination of days, nights and weekends based around a 5‑week roster.

- Resolve engineering issues on operational shifts.
- Follow maintenance schedules during maintenance shifts to ensure MMTs are reliable and fit for service.
- Adapt to operational requirement changes from time to time.
