We are seeking an experienced Foreman to oversee and coordinate bulk earthworks and muck shift operations on a busy Section 278 highways project in Bristol. You will lead site gangs and plant operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and well-coordinated movement of materials in line with programme and engineering requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and supervise site operatives and plant teams involved in muck shift and bulk earthworks operations.
- Manage cut and fill activities, ensuring material is moved efficiently to achieve formation levels and design requirements.
- Coordinate excavation, haul routes, stockpiling, and disposal/reuse of materials on site.
- Oversee operation of excavators, dumpers, dozers, and associated plant to maximise productivity and safety.
- Deliver supporting transportation infrastructure works including highways formation, drainage interfaces, and platform preparation.
- Conduct daily risk assessment briefings, method statement briefings, and toolbox talks.
- Ensure full compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards, particularly in live traffic or constrained urban environments.
- Plan and coordinate plant, labour, and haulage to maintain programme targets and reduce downtime.
- Ensure safe systems of work when working around live services, embankments, and unstable ground conditions.
- Interpret earthworks drawings, cut/fill models, and construction programmes into daily site activities.
- Monitor progress of muck shift operations against levels, surveys, and engineering requirements.
- Supervise subcontractors and haulage contractors, ensuring performance aligns with programme and quality expectations.
- Maintain clear communication with site management, engineers, and survey teams.
- Proactively identify and resolve logistical, ground condition, or productivity issues.
- Complete company IT systems induction and training within the first 1–3 months.
- Proven experience as a Foreman on muck shift, bulk earthworks, or large infrastructure projects.
- CITB SMSTS or SSSTS (depending on project requirements).
- First Aid at Work certification.
- Safety Critical Medical (as required by site).
- Strong understanding of earthworks operations, levels, and construction sequencing.
- Experience managing plant-heavy operations (excavators, dumpers, dozers, haul routes).
- Experience working in live highway or transportation infrastructure environments.
- Reliable, proactive, and able to manage multiple gangs and plant movements.
- Right to work in the UK.
- CPCS / NPORS (CSCS-affiliated) Excavator (Tracked).
- CPCS / NPORS Forward Tipping Dumper.
- CPCS / NPORS Ride-On Roller.
- GPS machine control awareness or experience.
NPORS cards must be CSCS-affiliated and carry the CSCS hologram to meet client requirements. Support can be provided to achieve compliance if required.
