Job summary

We are currently expanding the size of ourtherapies team by recruiting occupational therapists to support the rise ofstatutory occupational therapy provision across the London Borough of Sutton.In addition to this, we are looking to increase the number of permanent staffwithin our team.

Cognus Therapies are a thrivingmultidisciplinary team of occupational therapists, speech and languagetherapists, teachers, practitioners and therapy assistants who support childrenand young people aged 4 25 years in mainstream schools, colleges, andspecialist settings within the London Borough of Sutton and surroundingboroughs.

Cognus Therapies provides a robustsupervision framework with all posts receiving Managerial and ClinicalSupervision. Regular time is allocated for Professional Development.

Allapplicants are required to hold a registration with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of OccupationalTherapy (RCOT).

RESPONSIBLE FOR -

• Overseeing and delivering provision for pupils with Occupational Therapy Needs in mainstream settings and/or Specialist SEN provisions/bases/POST-16
• Liaising with Head Teachers, SENDCos, staff and parents to promote best outcomes

GRADE/PAY -£44,660.21 to £53,046.29 (1 FTE) per annum inclusive of High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS) or pro rata for term time plus additional weeks

1. JOB SUMMARY

Working within a multidisciplinary team of Occupational Therapistsand Speech Therapists the post holder will have the opportunity to work inlocal schools and colleges across the 4 years to 25 years age range or with asmaller age range within this.

Advising and supporting a range of schools/settings with childrenand young people with Occupational Therapy Needs (OT Needs) including apossible cohort with ASD, or PMLD to manage their caseload to ensure thatintended outcomes are delivered within agreed service standards.

Raising awareness of the needs of and strategies available forchildren and young people with OT Needs.

2. PRINCIPALACCOUNTABILITIES

To personallyundertake a case load of referrals to include:

Visiting and assessingchildren and young people with OT Needs.

Toappropriately identify service provision in line with child and young personsneeds at specialist, targeted or universal level of support.

Delivery of specialistprogrammes on an individual and/or small group basis.

Adviceand treatment for children and young people with functional difficulties andsensory processing needs.

Offeringadvice to parents and carers as well as teaching staff at a targeted oruniversal level.

Maintainingchildren/young peoples records to a high standard.

Specific Duties

To advise and supportschool staff on the education of children and young people with OT Needsincluding:

Screening andAssessment

Screening and prioritising new referrals in order to determine theneed and level of occupational therapy provision required in line with servicecriteria.

Atthe point of referral gathering relevant information regarding previous andcurrent input from health and social care services.

Carryingout a range of non-standardised and standardised assessments and interpreting arange of factors relating to the child or young persons condition; focusing onaccess to education.

Providingreports to referrers and other agencies involved in the child/young personscare.

Contributing to professional adviceregarding the statutory assessment and annual review process both in Sutton andin out-of-borough settings if necessary.

Treatment andProvision

Plan,create and deliver a wide range of tailored interventions and/or therapyprogrammes where direct OT input is indicated and effectively hand overprescribed programmes through training and modelling with teaching staff,parents and carers.

Torecommend, provide or advise on provision of equipment and take responsibilityfor demonstrating its usage and training clients/carers.

Toundertake risk assessment in complex moving and handling situations whereappropriate i.e. provision of equipment identified for the school environment.

To monitor and record childor young persons progress and effectiveness ofintervention through goal setting, outcome measurement and evaluation ofpractice and to communicate these as required to key stakeholders.

Toliaise and establish communication networks with the multidisciplinary team,external voluntary and statutory organisations as appropriate in planning forchild or young persons treatment.

Promotion of effective inclusion ofchildren and young people into all aspects of the school curriculum.

Maintaineffective liaison with all partners e.g., parents, professionals in Education,Health, Social Care and other Services with particular regard to Safeguardingand best practice.

Promote robust transition arrangementsfor pupils with Occupational Therapy needs including: Collaboration with arange of partner agencies to create effective transition support for specificchildren and young people.

Education andDevelopment Responsibility

To be aware of changing trends intreatment and promote Evidence Based Practice; embedding this into ownspecialist area of work in order to provide the highest standard of care toservice users.

To participate in clinical audit, servicedevelopment activities and research programmes as required. To contribute to formulating policies for specialist area and proposalsfor general service changes.

As part of the therapies team to plan,deliver and evaluate training sessions for schools and educationalproviders.

To engage with continual professionaldevelopment as identified through managerial and clinical supervision andappraisal, including attending training and courses as agreed.

To comply with the Cognus Limited mandatory training requirements.

To contribute tocollaborative working between all specialist SEN teams by

Attending and contributing to Team meetings.

Identifyingneeds and seeking advice within the framework of specialist teams and wideragencies as appropriate.

Liaisonwith parents/carers and schools to find collaborative strategies to overcomebarriers to learning and attend multi-agency meetings as required.

Embedding legislative change and keydevelopments relating to improved outcomes for children and young people withOccupational Therapy Needs.
