We are looking for a proactive and people-focused Transport Operations Manager to take ownership of our daily transport activities and ensure we consistently deliver to the standards our business expects. This is a hands-on leadership role at the heart of our operation—supporting our drivers, safeguarding quality, and helping us run a safe, efficient, and high-performing transport function. You will work closely with the management team to support wider company goals, collaborate on planned projects, and strengthen the strong working relationships already in place across the warehouse and driver teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety
- Ensure compliance with approved Food Manufacturing CCPs (CCP5 – on vehicle, CCP6 – at delivery point)
- Oversee 12-week PPM checks and annual MOT schedules
- Monitor driver licencing, CPC compliance, tachograph use, and address infringements
- Promote Health & Safety best practices, including correct PPE usage
- Support lone-working safety processes
- Monitor vehicle tracking systems and ensure effective reporting
- Oversee vehicle temperature control systems
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness and general maintenance standards
- Support recruitment and onboarding of new drivers
- Deliver induction and ongoing training
- Build driver schedules and manage shift cover
- Lead personal development and performance review conversations
- Conduct driver feedback and infringement meetings
- Manage communication channels: WhatsApp groups, team meetings, news boards
- Strengthen trust and team cohesion across the driver group
- Ensure high load quality and support drivers with a successful start to their routes
- Review and resolve store-level issues
- Track missed drops and lost crates
- Analyse and improve operational processes for efficiency and accuracy
- Manage cash-handling procedures
- Oversee onboarding of new stores, including training materials, resources, and key arrangements
- Review routing, mileage, and fuel consumption
- Monitor and follow up on accidents, incidents, fines, and delivery mistakes
- Drive consistency across all drivers
- Ensure efficient procurement and use of consumables
Role Structure
- 11:00–17:00: Hands-on operational presence ensuring vehicles are cleaned, maintained, and loaded to standard; running routine 1:1s with drivers
- 17:00–19:30: Planning and system review time reviewing data, preparing for upcoming days/weeks/months, supporting project work
This role is primarily off the road, with driving only required to cover planned leave and emergency sickness cover. Any same-day sickness cover will be followed by a review the next working day. You will collaborate closely with the warehouse manager to ensure a smooth daily handoff between warehouse and transport teams, and engage regularly with senior managers to lead and deliver planned projects.
