Anglo-Catholic Mission Assistant in Birmingham

We are looking for two Anglo-Catholic Mission Assistants in the Birmingham Anglo-Catholic Mission Scheme.

Location: Birmingham

Duration: 10 Months (September-June Full-Time)

This is a voluntary position; however, it will attract housing with the other Mission Assistant (including utilities), plus £500 per month subsistence and additional expenses for the duration of the Mission Assistants' participation.

Do you feel called to serve in a vibrant urban setting, gaining hands-on experience in outreach, worship, and discipleship? This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily life of Anglo-Catholic parishes, working closely with an experienced Missioner. You’ll be part of a team committed to deepening faith, engaging the local community, and renewing the Church’s mission. This opportunity will be especially appealing to those discerning their vocation, lay or ordained.

What You'll Be Doing:

• Mission & Outreach: Help develop and lead initiatives that share the Gospel and serve our local communities.
• Worship & Liturgy: Assist in the preparation and celebration of Mass, the Daily Office, and other liturgies in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.
• Teaching & Discipleship: Support Bible studies, catechism classes, and other learning opportunities.
• Team Building: Help identify and support volunteers and leaders.
• Collaborative Ministry: Work closely with clergy, lay leaders, and volunteers to build a vibrant, mission-focused church community.
• Learning: Be part of a learning community, undertaking modules in mission in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, including a retreat.

Has a strong commitment to the Anglo-Catholic tradition in the Church of England. Is passionate about mission and willing to engage with diverse urban communities. Is eager to learn more about liturgical worship and pastoral ministry. Brings a proactive attitude to missional activities in a variety of parish settings. May or may not have previous experience—but has a heart for ministry and a desire to grow.

As part of this year-long scheme, you will be part of a learning community with trainee leaders from a growing Anglo-Catholic community. This will include monthly seminars, a book grant, and a retreat at the end of the year.

• What is Anglo-Catholic Mission? Are the aims of the Oxford Movement relevant in today’s church? (Church history and mission)
• What does the road to Emmaus teach us about the presence of Christ in the Eucharist? How do we preach so that we meet Jesus in the Eucharist? (Sacraments and mission)
• How can we view Advent missionally? What does it mean to wait on Christ in a secular world? (Liturgical year and mission)
• Why were the shepherds the first to meet Jesus? Who are the shepherds in our communities and how can they meet Christ in the Eucharist? (Community organising for mission)
• How does the image of i inform the mission? (Doctrine and mission)
• Church planting in the Anglo-Catholic wilderness (Being pioneers in mission)
• Lamenting with others: incarnational funeral ministry (Occasional offices and mission)
• The Daily Office as a missional imperative: How do we guard against the enemy as we innovate? (Prayer and mission)
• How does our baptism change our whole lives? (Occasional offices and mission)
• The church as the bride of Christ: weddings and missional opportunity (Occasional offices and mission)
