Code First Girls is seeking experienced Java developers to provide technical 1:1 coaching for Software Engineers working with our partner companies. This is a freelance role, designed to support graduates and/or employees' professional growth over a six-month programme while helping CFG address the gender imbalance in tech.
Commitment: One or more hours per week from Jan ‘26 - July ‘26 (dependent on demand)
Remuneration: £60 per coaching session delivered (inclusive of any prep and follow-up work)

Technical Coaching Programme Outline
Our coaching programme provides on-the-job support to Software Engineers, helping them to build skills, confidence, and supporting their career growth. As a technical coach, you’ll bring your professional expertise, guide learners through challenges, and where necessary, collaborate with the CFG team to shape programme content.
Role & Responsibilities
- Lead 1:1 and group coaching sessions via pre-agreed virtual platforms (Zoom, Google Meet).
- Commit to one 1:1 session per week, as a minimum.
- Sessions are 50 minutes plus 10 minutes for post-session feedback and administrative duties.
- Collaborate with CFG to develop workshops and group session content.
- Manage your own availability and organise sessions with coachees.
- Prepare adequately for coaching sessions based on coachees’ requested support.
- Interact with coachees and CFG staff via designated communication channel when necessary.
- Provide detailed feedback on coachee progress and complete end-of-programme feedback forms.
- Represent CFG professionally and adhere to all company policies and Code of Conduct.
- Complete all training materials and info sessions, where required for the programme.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Professional experience as a Java developer (5–6 years minimum).
- Strong technical skills in Java (backend).
- Strong experience and knowledge of: DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis, AWS, Kubernetes, Technical architecture knowledge, Queuing systems and queuing theory, Technical decision-making expertise.
- Passion for coaching, mentoring, and teaching others.
- Strong presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in both 1:1 and group settings.
This is a remote opportunity so you may be based anywhere in the UK, but please note all sessions will be conducted on UK time and you must have access to strong and reliable wifi, along with a professional environment and adequate equipment and resources to effectively deliver coaching.
