Ready to step up from engineering into owning projects end to end?
Want work that's still hands-on when it needs to be - not a purely desk-based PM role?
Looking for education-sector projects where technical know-how and customer confidence both count?
This is a full-time, permanent Project Manager role, focused on delivering technical installation projects across schools and education sites - from survey and design through to handover.
Working pattern & location
You'll be based in the West Midlands, with a mix of office, home and UK-wide customer sites. You'll travel for surveys, project meetings, install support and handovers when needed - this isn't a role where you're on the road every day. A significant part of the job is planning and prep from the office or home: project plans, scopes of work, materials and coordinating engineers before anyone arrives on site.
What you can expect
You’ll receive:
- Basic salary circa £35,000, up to £38,000 depending on experience
- Company vehicle and fuel card
- Commission/bonuses for successful project delivery
- Full-time, permanent employment
Clear ownership of projects from survey to handover - not just chasing paperwork while someone else owns the outcome.
What you'll actually be doing
You'll support and manage projects from initial site survey and design through installation, commissioning and handover - staying technically credible on site when it matters.
Your role will include:
- Surveying sites and turning customer requirements into practical technical solutions
- Designing solutions and producing project plans, maps and scopes of work
- Planning equipment and materials so engineers are properly prepared before they arrive
- Coordinating engineers and suppliers across live projects
- Working within project budgets and keeping delivery commercially aware
- Dealing directly with Headteachers, School Business Managers, IT Managers, Site Managers and contractors
- Getting involved on site when needed - troubleshooting, quality-checking installs and supporting junior engineers
- Seeing projects properly finished, not leaving loose ends
Projects are predominantly in schools and education and typically cover areas such as structured Cat6/Cat6A cabling, fibre, Wi‑Fi and network infrastructure, CCTV, access control, intruder alarms, PA and school lockdown systems, and network cabinet upgrades. You won't need experience across every area - solid hand‑on engineering exposure across at least two or three of these is what matters.
What we're looking for
Ideally, you'll:
- Come from an engineering or technical installation background (ICT, data cabling, security, lead engineer or site supervisor profiles fit well)
- Have hands‑on exposure across at least 2-3 of the project areas above
- Be looking to progress into (or grow in) project management, with strong organisation and ownership
- Be able to survey sites, help design solutions and produce clear project plans
- Manage multiple projects at once and coordinate engineers confidently
- Deal professionally with customers and turn what they want into a workable plan
- Stay hands‑on when needed rather than purely desk‑based
- Hold a full UK driving licence
- Be able to obtain an Enhanced DBS
- Be comfortable travelling across the UK when projects require it
It would be particularly beneficial if you have:
- Experience with platforms such as UniFi, Aruba, Hikvision or Paxton (useful, not essential)
- Prior project or site‑supervisor experience in education or multi‑site environments
You don't need to already be an established Project Manager. Technical knowledge, attitude, organisation and confident customer dealings matter more than a perfect PM CV.
A bit about the environment
If you want to own delivery properly - still technically involved, not stuck behind a Gantt chart - this could be a strong fit.
This is a business that:
- Values the right hire over a rushed one
- Needs PMs who can still help on site and develop junior engineers
- Works heavily in schools and education infrastructure
- Expects projects finished properly, not left half‑done
You’ll be treated like an adult and supported to succeed, not managed to death.
