Machining Technician Apprenticeship in Weymouth

We are looking for a Machining and Assembly Apprentice to join our team. The company has a good history in supporting apprentices over the past 30 years, with the Director Team all being apprentices with the company.

Work with state‑of‑the‑art machinery and learn how to assemble aerospace assemblies while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Wage is £16,224 for your first year, which could increase depending on your age, in line with the National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices.

Hours: Mon–Thurs: 7.30am – 4.30pm, Fri: 8am – 1pm, totalling 39 hours a week. Duration: 3 years 6 months.

Most of your apprenticeship will be spent working, where you’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you’ll do at work:

• Learn how to program and operate machines (Manual and CNC).
• Help in assembly.
• Learn how to use different hand tools.
• Read technical drawings.
• Cut materials for production.

Where you’ll work: 8A Albany Road, Granby Industrial Estate, Weymouth, DT4 9TH.

Training: Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Comply with statutory health and safety regulations and procedures, as well as environmental, ethical and sustainability regulations and procedures, including safe disposal of waste, recycling or re‑use of materials, and efficient use of resources.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and set up conventional or CNC machines.
• Operate and adjust conventional or CNC machines.
• Apply risk assessment and hazard identification processes and procedures in the work area.
• Monitor, obtain and check stock and supplies, and complete stock returns.
• Record information - paper based or electronic.
• Read and interpret information used to produce machined components.
• Apply engineering, mathematical and scientific principles.
• Plan and organise own work and resources.
• Follow and apply inspection, quality assurance procedures and processes.
• Select machining process and setup tooling and work holding devices.
• Set and adjust machine operating parameters.
• Apply machining operations and techniques to produce complex components.
• Measure and check components.
• Select and check condition of tools and equipment.
• Identify issues, resolve and take action as needed.
• Apply fault-finding and diagnostic testing procedures to identify faults.
• Maintain the work area and return any resources and consumables.
• Communicate with others verbally.
• Follow machine shut down, safe isolation, handover, start up or warm up procedures.
• Apply continuous improvement techniques and devise suggestions for improvement.
• Apply ethical principles and team working principles.

The apprentice will attend Coastland College one day per week (term-time only).

Requirements:

• GCSE in Maths (grade 4).
• Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience.
• The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements: You MUST be prepared to commit to your work and training for the duration of the apprenticeship. You will be required to attend an interview and assessment at Coastland College to ensure you meet the requirements for the apprenticeship.
