Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Civils and Groundworks Estimator role based in Chesterfield. The Estimator will review tender documents and project specifications, prepare detailed cost estimates, and produce bills of quantities for groundworks and civil engineering projects. Daily responsibilities include conducting site visits where required, assessing risks and constraints, and liaising with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to obtain accurate pricing and technical information. The role involves analyzing subcontractor and supplier quotations, preparing competitive bids, and contributing to value engineering and cost-saving strategies. The Estimator will also help maintain estimating databases, support contract negotiations, and provide clear handover information to delivery teams to ensure projects start with robust cost and scope understanding.
Qualifications
- Civils and groundworks estimating skills, including experience preparing bills of quantities, cost breakdowns, and tender submissions for residential, commercial, or industrial projects.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation accurately.
- Proficiency with estimating and construction-related software (e.g., Excel, estimating packages, and project management tools), and confident use of digital documentation systems.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and current industry rates, along with an understanding of health, safety, and environmental standards relevant to civil engineering and groundworks.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with internal teams, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers in a professional manner.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities, including managing multiple tenders, meeting deadlines, and maintaining accurate records.
- Experience in a similar estimating role within civils, groundworks, or general construction; relevant vocational qualifications or a degree in construction, civil engineering, or a related field are beneficial.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to attend site visits in the Midlands region as required.
