Role Summary
Maintenance Engineer with a hands‑on focus on ensuring the reliability, performance and safety of site equipment and facilities at the Wincanton location. The role involves carrying out mechanical and electrical maintenance, supporting day‑to‑day operations, and contributing to continuous improvement of plant performance. Working closely with operations and engineering colleagues, the role also provides technical support, assists with new installations, and helps maintain high standards of safety and compliance. It is ideally suited to an experienced engineer with a strong background in a production environment who can diagnose issues, work proactively and manage workload effectively.
Responsibilities
- Mechanical service, repair, replacement of motors, gearboxes, couplings, seals, pumps, valves, hydraulics, pneumatics etc.
- Electrical service, repair, replacement of motors, sensors, valves, control gear, VSDs, servos, instrumentation, power distribution systems, safety systems etc.
- Takes care of the electrical and mechanical settings, documenting them where possible.
- Performs measurements, adjustments, tests and calibrations.
- Identification and selection of suitable parts and spares for the task.
- Evaluates the possibility or necessity of repairing or replacing components.
- Suggests and proposes improvements to increase plant availability, quality and safety.
- Provides technical support to operators.
- Supports the projects department in the implementation of new equipment, plant or services.
- Maintains control measurement equipment and weighing equipment.
- Respects company policy concerning hygiene and safety during activities.
Requirements
- Education: Recognized engineering apprenticeship or HNC/HND in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years experience in a reactive production environment.
- Building Services experience: boilers, air handling plant, refrigeration.
- Previous shift work experience.
- Experience using a CMMS.
- Background in the food sector.
- Experience with packaging machinery.
Skills & Capabilities
- Accurate root‑cause analysis of breakdowns and execution of effective corrective action.
- Welding – preferably TIG and Arc.
- Reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical schematic diagrams.
- Knowledge of maintenance methodologies – PPM, CBM, PM, TBM.
