Overview of the Engineering Design & Performance Manager (Mechanical) role at Co-op. This role provides technical guidance in respect of mechanical building engineering services to our diverse property portfolio, advising on engineering strategy, maintenance, design standards, technical specifications and compliance obligations across the Co-op.
Base pay range: £55,000 - £65,000 plus benefits (Work Level 5) Manchester city centre
Responsibilities:
- Help us keep our engineering standards up to date by reviewing, updating, and managing them across the business and provide technical assurance from a compliance perspective against Co-op legal obligations.
- Lead technical sign-off for projects, ensuring everything meets engineering standards.
- Identify trends and opportunities to improve processes, especially in investment workstreams.
- Lead on technical matters internally, supporting cost-saving initiatives by coordinating value engineering efforts.
- Support property delivery teams, visiting construction sites to carry out quality inspections.
- Drive change by exploring new ideas and innovations—from supplier visits to market research—toward sustainability and net-zero goals.
- Build relationships across the business and develop your own professional growth with autonomy.
Qualifications:
- A degree in a relevant mechanical engineering discipline and either a Chartered Engineer status or working towards ECUK registration.
- Detailed knowledge of legal compliance, ideally in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, LEV, gas and water hygiene (P901, P903 preferred).
- Extensive knowledge of current Building Regulations, mechanical systems, design, specification, and maintenance requirements.
- Excellent communication and engagement skills with the ability to build relationships with internal and external partners.
- Experience working with large and complex organisations with a diverse property portfolio.
