Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor) in Uxbridge

This training is for a nurse with relevant qualifications to undertake the SCPHN training in order to become a health visitor. It involves undertaking the SCHPN course at Brunel University London for the academic side of the course and you will be gaining your clinical experience with Hillingdon 0‑19 Service where you will have a supervisor and an assessor. You will be given a fixed‑term one‑year full‑time contract to undertake a PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course (Health Visiting or School Nurse) starting in September 2026 at Brunel University. Sponsorship will be paid at band 5 salary. The course is funded by the HEE. Successful completion of the course will lead to registration on Part 3 of the NMC register, an NMC recordable qualification, and eligibility to apply for a post as a Health Visitor.

The student post is a development post, building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will work closely with the people who use our services, their families, friends and carers and influence how people experience our services. Nurses are expected to be kind, responsive and professional, and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

• keeping the people who use our services as safe as possible through sound clinical skills
• ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by utilising evidence‑based policies and procedures
• ensuring the people using our services have a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership throughout the care planning process

You will start off as supernumerary, observing your supervisor and other members of the team, but will gradually build up your skills in order to do the work which health visitors do independently. As a student health visitor or school nurse, you will be involved in the Healthy Child Programme, this will be achieved through group work, developmental reviews, health promotion sessions, school visits and home visits, to name a few. These may be face‑face or virtual but you will be supported throughout in order to gain the confidence needed to support families. You will also gain knowledge and experience in safeguarding and child protection which is another important part of our role.

Education and Qualifications

• Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery, or evidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed NMC registration within 2 months of the start date
• DipHE (or above) qualification equivalent to 120 credits at level 5 (of the Higher Education Credit Framework for England) or evidence of previous education and learning to this level.
• Evidence of continual professional development at level 6

Experience

• Experience of working within multi‑disciplinary teams
• Evidence of involvement in the management of difficult situations and conflict resolution
• Experience of managing staff within a team, evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload
• Experience of working in the community
• Experience of working with children and families

Knowledge and Skills

• Academic ability to study independently at degree or postgraduate level
• Excellent, adaptable communication skills both written and verbal
• Numeracy and Literacy skills
• Ability to support children and families to make informed decisions in relation to their health and well‑being
• Demonstrate ability to adapt to working within a changing environment
