Would you like to get involved inundertaking the challenge of delivering a quality, forward thinking service within a community and primary care setting?

If so, we are currently seeking to recruit enthusiastic, innovative and motivated Senior Registered Nurses to undertake the Specialist Practitioner Qualification District Nurse course.

The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.

To apply you will need:

  • To be a Registered Nurse with a range of post basic qualification with community nursing experience?
  • Have significant evidence of undertaking Higher Education at Level 6 or above in the past years
  • Have evidence of professional development in your clinical area
  • Experience of community working.
  • Be dedicated to work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team, patients, family and carers to ensure the best possible outcomes
  • Be ready to develop clinical leadership skills to improve healthcare delivery
  • Be able to demonstrate your understanding of current practice and policy issues relating to your chosen area of practice

Working for our organisation

The post is funded by Health Education England (Funding subject to approval).

Fixed term sponsorship to Specialist Community Practitioner studentship from September 2025 to August 2026.

The course will be 50% theory and 50% practical and will focus on: clinical nursing practice, care and programme management, clinical practice development and clinical practice leadership.

Please be aware that the SPQ DN is only available as a Level 7 course.

The post of Specialist Community Practitioner Sponsorship Student is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Educated to 2:1 Level 6 / Degree Level in relevant area
  • Up to date with local and national mandatory and statutory training.
  • Ability to study at Level 7 post graduate diploma route.
  • Evidence of post registration study/ learning

Knowledge and Skills

  • Awareness of the role of contemporary District Nursing
  • Knowledge of local and national policies which influence the provision of primary care services
  • Knowledge of long term conditions management
  • Demonstrate knowledge of health promotion
  • Current knowledge of safeguarding & mental capacity assessment
  • Awareness of the criteria underpinning consent
  • Knowledge of assessment of health needs of the local population
  • Background knowledge of current policy relating to public health and primary care

Experience

  • Experience at Band 6 Senior Community Nurse level.
  • Multi-disciplinary collaborative working.
  • Experience undertaking holistic assessments of patients, including those with multiple pathology and complex health and social needs
  • Experience of line managing Jr staff members, including completing appraisals and supervisions

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Broad range of clinical skills and competencies relevant to adult community nursing.
  • Leadership and management skills.
  • Effective Time Management.
  • Ability and confidence to work using own initiative both alone and as part of a team.

University Requirements

  • SPQ DN course is run at Level 7, so it is expected that applicants are confident that they can study at Level 7 postgraduate level.
  • Successful candidates will be asked to create a PowerPoint presentation on a subject chosen by City University, which will be shared with applicants before the face-to-face interviews
