Job Overview

Highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist for the Camden Neurology and Stroke Service. The role is based in the community and involves assessment, intervention and support for adults living with neurological conditions.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Deliver high‑quality Adult Community Speech and Language Therapy assessments and interventions aligned with national and local best‑practice guidelines.
  • Support and supervise other SLTs, Rehabilitation Assistants and students.
  • Lead service development and quality improvement projects.
  • Depute for and support the Clinical Lead Speech & Language Therapist as required.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy qualification.
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Successful completion of advanced practitioner post‑graduate study relevant to the field (e.g., dysphagia, counselling, leadership, aphasia).
  • Successful completion of highly specialist/expert short courses relevant to the field (e.g., training the trainer, clinical governance, progressive neurological disorders, AAC, palliative care).
  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks, e.g., CEN Community, CEN Counselling.
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

Experience

  • Specialist working experience with people with neurological disorders.
  • Delivering specialist training to a range of audiences.
  • Working in multidisciplinary/multiagency teams.
  • Working within the community setting.
  • Supervision of students/support workers.
  • Carrying out evidence‑based audit and research projects.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capability to communicate complex, sensitive information.
  • Interpret a range of assessments relevant to the clinical field, including instrumental swallowing assessment, phonemic transcription, and formal language tests.
  • Critically evaluate published research within a specific area of clinical expertise.
  • Skill in delivering presentations and training, including adapting style for diverse audiences.
  • Teamworking ability.

Knowledge

  • Highly specialist assessment tools and procedures for communication and swallowing difficulties in neurological conditions.
  • Key characteristics for differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing difficulties in neurological conditions.
  • Selection, setting and evaluation of highly specialist treatment goals.
  • Highly specialist therapeutic interventions with an evidence base.
  • Application of local cultural, linguistic and demographic factors in managing a caseload.
  • Multi‑disciplinary team approaches to patient care.
  • Mentoring, advising and supervising less experienced SLTs, support staff and students.
  • Basic qualitative and quantitative audit and research methods.
  • Understanding of clinical governance principles.
  • Development and implementation of short‑term, clinically based projects.
  • Approaches to supporting patients and carers with challenging behaviour, mental health needs or high distress.
