Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician – Band 3

St Charles Hospital, London – CNWL (Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust)
Fixed‑term apprenticeship – 24 months (up to February 2028)
Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week (plus a 2‑hour Saturday dispensary shift, every 8 to 10 weeks)
Salary £30,546 – £32,207 per annum (pro rata if part‑time)

Job overview

This training post will equip you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to qualify as a registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). You will be enrolled on a GPhC‑approved apprenticeship course and will work across CNWL pharmacy teams under the supervision of a pharmacist or senior pharmacy technician.

Main duties

  • Work full time as a member of the pharmacy team while completing a level 3/level 4 Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship programme.
  • Rotate through various pharmacy departments, supporting teams and learning new skills.
  • Provide an accurate and efficient pharmacy dispensary service.
  • Deliver an excellent medicines optimisation service to patients on bedded wards and within community teams.
  • Work safely and efficiently as part of the stores, procurement and distribution team.
  • Fulfil the requirements of the combined pharmacy technician training programme.

Qualifications

  • Basic education to meet enrolment requirements: Maths, English GCSE A*-C (4-9) or equivalent OR Maths, English and Science GCSE A*-C (4-9) or equivalent.
  • Ability to meet the apprenticeship standard.
  • Willingness to undertake functional skills qualifications for English and/or maths if necessary.
  • Completion of a GPhC‑recognised Pharmacy Support Staff qualification (e.g. Pharmacy Assistant, Pharmacy Counter Assistant or Pharmacy Dispenser qualification or Level 2 apprenticeship in Pharmacy Services).
  • Completion of medicines optimisation training (POD assessment and transcribing for supply).

Experience

  • Experience working in a team.
  • Experience of health and safety practices.
  • Experience working to deadlines.
  • Previous experience in a pharmacy setting – pharmacy bootcamp graduates will be considered as partial pharmacy experience.
  • Previous experience in a secondary/tertiary care pharmacy setting.
  • Previous experience providing medicines optimisation services (POD checks & transcribing for supply).

Skills

  • Computer literate – practical experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Initiative to solve problems.
  • Ability to meet objectives and targets.
  • Good organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Dispensing skills (primary or secondary care).
  • Confident use of electronic prescribing/ordering and patient management systems.
