Job overview
This Footcare Assistant Apprenticeship is part of a highly motivated Community Podiatry Team. It includes foot‑care, orthotic manufacture and administrative duties. You will complete the Support Worker (Foot Care Assistant) Podiatry Apprenticeship Level 5, with in‑house training on orthotic manufacture. While completing the apprenticeship you will work as a foot care assistant performing basic nail care and orthotics/insole manufacture.
This development post is Band 3, Fixed Term, with a potential offer of a Band 4 Footcare/Support worker post upon successful completion of the apprenticeship.
Main duties of the job
The service provides foot care to patients with a number of podiatric and medical conditions such as diabetes, neuropathy, chronic diseases, wound management, musculoskeletal conditions, and terminally ill patients.
- Provide nail/core podiatry care to patients pre‑assessed by a podiatrist.
- Manufacture insoles and orthotics.
- Assist and carry out wound dressing as directed by podiatrists.
- Assist in nail surgery and undertake nail surgery dressings.
- Provide administrative support to the community‑based podiatry service.
- Be involved in departmental audits.
- Behave consistently with the values and beliefs of the organisation and promote these day to day.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Provide nail care/dressings to patients, including high‑risk patients, within the podiatry department; provide core podiatry care on completion of apprenticeship under podiatrist supervision.
- Assist or undertake the manufacture of insoles and orthotics following prescriptions by a podiatrist; issue and advise on orthotic/insoles.
- Identify the risk status of feet, including patients with diabetes, and take appropriate action (e.g., inform podiatrist).
- Treat high‑risk patients with conditions such as diabetes, neuropathy, wounds and other chronic diseases.
- Assist with nail surgery preparation and dressings.
- Participate in infection prevention and control, health and safety; clean clinical areas, monitor appointment availability, maintain stock levels and equipment.
- Perform administrative duties to ensure effective patient care (e.g., stock, accurate record keeping, email, appointment scheduling).
- Comply with Health and Safety legislation, including COSHH, temperature readings, risk assessment and infection control and waste disposal.
- Achieve and provide evidence for the Support Worker Apprenticeship at Level 5.
- Complete in‑house orthotic/insole manufacture and care certificate if not already held.
Person specification
Education / Qualification
- GCSEs in English and Maths at Level 2 (pass 4 and above).
- NVQ Level 2 qualification/equivalent or three additional GCSEs.
Experience / Training
- Experience working with the public.
- Evidence of ongoing personal training.
- Experience working within teams.
- Experience working with a diverse client group.
- Previous healthcare qualification/experience as a healthcare assistant or support worker.
- Experience working within the NHS.
- IT training.
- Awareness of health and safety / First Aid.

- Manual dexterity skills.

- Assist in moving and handling patients who may be immobile, often working in difficult conditions.
